A free sampler?

So I will be removing LinuxSampler as it is proprietary. Are there an actually free samplers? I mostly need SFZ but GIG is also very preferable.

I've built it and run it here, but for me it's no replacement for LS.

The plugin seems to work fine in Bitwig 1.3.11, tested only with instruments from the Sonatina symphonic soundset. Sounded good. Very simple operation, i.e. there are no controls beyond loading the SFZ file.

I know LS has a few advanced features (like disk streaming), but since sfzs are single instrument so loading it all is usually fine..

I don't use it often but when I do I usually load instruments in its various supported formats. Though LS has other features I find useful, versatility in that regard is its primary attraction here.

FYI: I'm considering porting sfzero to DPF.

That would be great. A simple SFZ loader would be a real boon to my workflow.

There's no FOSS sampler comparable to LS

It may not have some features you need (it doesn't play gig files for one), but Calf Fluidsynth is the easiest way I have found to load and play SFZs (D'oh, this information is incorrect. See below. Thanks Spencer). I believe it is GPL.

fluidsynth only plays sf2, not sfz unfortunately. Someone could theoretically write a similar plugin frontend to LS. I'd appreciate that myself. The closest thing is carla, but since I don't import my samples as plugins (the list is already too long with just plugins), it doesn't get me there. I suppose I should just do that since I already use the search to find any plugin anyway.

I guess you know, that Polyphone "http://polyphone.fr/" can import sfz-files and export them as sf2-files? It also can be used as a module for playing sfz-files.

I would also want to see SFZ be loaded into FluidSynth as well. Once it's done and once Calf adds in sfz file format support, I don't have to deal with dragging connections from an sfz file to audio output every time I switch to a different sfz file. That would really save a lot of hassle when trying out different patches.

I did a search for SFZ and Fluidsynth in Google and while looking at the web page, the devs of Fluidsynth has a list of proposed features, one of them being SFZ and bank support:

Should they be doing API overhaul before adding support for SFZ? They did mention 24-bit Soundfont support, but how long has it been since they proposed features? I did not see the date that the page has been updated.
