I also want to show up at the gig boot the computer, plug in the controller and go. One thing I will say about using Ardour3, you save the session and everything is ready to go next time.
Sounds like Carla to me. Just save the carla project in your home directory and drag and drop it from the file explorer in the RHS column. I've had really good results using it with sfzs. Haven't tried the setBfree plugin on it, but I haven't had great luck in any host with setBfree lv2. Never dug into it.
I thought so too,

Carla is SO close and when falkTX added that awesome MIDIsplit plugin I was over the moon, however it doesn't recognize SetBfree and IIRC it has LV2 UI extensions that Carla doesn't support yet. The reason I'm so adamant about SetBfree is it's leslie sounds so much more realistic than most other hardware (Yamaha, Korg) Synths I've heard and I am admittedly a bit of a 'sound snob' and very picky, the Leslie on SetBfree works in a very on/off realistic way and has that magical 'Chorale' sound nailed, many hardware Synths just have a very lame modulation effect on the mod wheel that just sounds Cheesy.

Something not so great about Carla when you separate it from the rest of falkTX's amazing session tools is that it is a bit awkward to manage using JACK1 without going to NSM or using a scripted combination of Carla's project files and aj-snapshot, not an insurmountable problem I realize but just an extra layer of complexity and an added learning curve since so far I've lived happily without session management due to being an Ardour fanboy for years now. I have high hopes for Carla still though and I'm sure in time it will support SetBfree, if the LV2 version comes to fruition it will be a win-win for sure!

Earlier, I answered the question you asked without offering any other alternatives.

Here's an alternative: TyrellN6 http://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6 it's a very nice and free vst synth with a ton of great presets. A wide variety of sounds including lot of nice pads and organs. It works excellent in Wine. It's my go to synth, mostly because I'm not a synth guy. I just want good usable presets. It's not very resource intensive either, so it's easy to run multiple instances and create layers.

Hey thanks! That's perfect!

Sounds like we have a lot in common, I also have zero interest in creating Synth sounds, my eternal gratitude to the tweakers out there that have painstakingly provided so many great synths and presets over the years... my eyes glaze over about 3 seconds after I turn the first LFO knob... :) If a plugin or app works in Wine and serves a purpose not yet covered in Linux I also embrace it and enjoy using ArdourVST, Steinberg WaveLab, MPEG-2 VCR and about a dozen new and old Windows programs that run wonderfully in Wine along with all the killer FLOSS stuff. If it's useful and works the platform considerations are a distant secondary consideration to me.

I'm thinking I may do a video tutorial on ArdourVST...."ArdourVST, The Ardour of Which We Do Not Speak"...

Yeah, I'm a guitarist too.

I could get by with native Linux apps, except what I do is very sequencer intensive. I do jazz fusion; so a lot of triplets, time signature changes and I need to be able to insert chords as I'm not a keyboard player. That pushed me to Reaper, which is great, but no native Linux plugin support. Yet.

That's pretty much my goal. Maybe somewhere between Weather Report and Steely Dan (minus the vocals). Basically, 'Birdland' is the best piece of music ever made, IMO.

I haven't completed a project yet. I'm getting close on one, but health problems keep cropping up and stalling it. My biggest weakness is understanding advanced harmony. Maj7, Min7, Dim chords are the most I can handle right now. That, and my guitar skills  Rhythmically and arrangement-wise, I think I'm in the ballpark.

Do that and you'll be my hero :)

Actually birdland isn't my favorite (perhaps just because its popular), but Heavy Weather as a whole is great. Black Market is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Pffffffffft?

If you want to substitute Return To Forever for Weather Report, I'm okay with that. There are others. More than I want to try to list.

I like using Birdland as an example, because anyone can listen to it and understand the melody; but for those of us who listen more intently, there's a lot more going on with it. It's a goal, and it's good to have goals.

Returning to GMaq's original question - amsynth and Noisemaker are lv2 synths with a large number of presets some of which are pads.

Concerning linuxsampler as an lv2 plugin - I don't see the problem. It works in an unconventional way, i.e. you load the plugin on a track, then start qsampler or fanstasia to load the sample.
Once loaded you can quit qsampler/fanstasia and your selection will be saved in the Ardour/qtractor session file, and you never have to mess with qsampler/fanstasia unless you want to change the sample.
I prefer linuxsampler as it is native linux and supports gig, sfz, and sf2.

Concerning Carla vs Ardour/qtractor as virtual instrument hosts, I prefer Ardour/qtractor since it combines session management, instrument/plugin host, mixer(s) in one go.

Good thoughts. Thats a great goal. Accessible music is a gateway into a genre. I usually just make whatever style music I've been listening to lately. So a different goal for each song.

Ah a Corea project... he's nuts. This is fantastic though. I haven't listened to Return to Forever much.

Maybe we should move to a different thread though so Gmaq can get what he needs... :\
