New sf2 editor: polyphone

Post by antiesen »

Dear Sirs !

Let me point you to a new software. It filled a big hole in my toolbox:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/polyphone/

from their sourceforge-site:

* support of sf2 format v2.01 and v2.04
* support for 24 bits samples
* support for jack and asio audio servers
* analysis of frequency peaks and estimation of sample pitch
* automatic loop of samples, with steady state detection and use of a crossfade
* simultaneous editing of parameters
* specific tools for musical instrument creation
* a recorder, for the record of what is played in a .wav file
* built-in synthetizer, controlled by a virtual keyboard or midi signals
* built-in user manual
* sfz import / export <<<< !

Wow! Does that mean I can convert sfz-soundfonts to sf2? That would be great since the fluidsynth module is better integrated in the available DAWs than linuxsampler.

Unfortunately the binary crashes (lies something about cannot get 25 MB of RAM). I try to get the source and compile it on my 64 Bit Xubuntu 12.04 LTS. But wow, the source tree is huge: 664 MB

It compiles out of the box and seems to work.

I tried to convert TheOpenSourceDrumKit-Complete-V1.sfz. The program didn't crash but I am afraid there are many sfz-parms unkonwn. Some instruments seemed to be there but were muted. Unfortunately I am no expert in soundfonts. I even do not know the difference between an instrument and a preset :(

I think polyphone is great thing but I think its a waste to convert SFZ to SF2. Linuxsampler as plugin is a little different, but once you are used to it is no problem at all, and linuxsampler supports SFZ, Gig, and SF2 and so is quite versatile. zth music just made a nice tutorial about how to use LS with Ardour: http://www.zthmusic.com/linuxsampler-an ... -together/, though the method described is the similar for any DAW

Will it support features, not presenting in sf2 format?
Imho, inverse format placement, with most featureful as primary and others (sf2 and even gig) for import/export would be more correct.
When new format, currently developed by LS community, will be ready, it could replace sfz on its "post", if it will deprecate it.

Sorry, if i was too pretty. I need yet to learn all features of sf2 and all other formats.
Just like this editor :)
I simply was abused by strange formats priority with sf2 as main and sfz only for import/export.

Yes, as you already recognised, it makes not much sense to convert every sfz to sf2 - specially when
your working with linuxsampler.
- But we have now an intrument-editor with jack realtime preview!
You can build your intruments much more quicker and convert to sfz.
If needed you can add exclusive sfz - opcodes in a text editor and
get a sf2 backup too.
