I'm not so sure this is fair. Java processes are slow to start up and relatively heavy on memory, but those aspects don't seem too relevant here. When running, a Java program is not that much slower than a program written in any other language.

(that said I don't think I'd write an audio effect in Java myself - and that's from someone who writes Java as a day-job... I don't really see how the advantages of a language like Java would help you in that particular problem domain)

Java is run in a virtual machine. Never use virtualization in a real-time system. I'm fighting that at work too. Android is run in the dalvik virtual machine. Its very difficult to guarantee anything in a virtual machine (anyone notice a dearth of audio apps for android?). Typically virtual machines are to abstract away from the hardware. Its better to compile for the hardware (and use its features) for low-latency. Its more work to configure the virtual machine for the device as google is now trying to do than to just write it in a compiled language in the first place.

Sorry, you touched a sensitive subject. Feel free to give these a try. Never hurts to try. If he opens up the source they could be ported to a language I like better ;)

The plugin creator says that the source isn't availabe YET, so I have hope to see these plugins get a proper OSS release. There are some cool effects, but nothing that trumps my disdain for java.
Think like a gun.
