LADSPA Trigger Plugin

Post by funkmuscle »

I was reading this article and wanted to know why this plugin LADSPA Trigger Plugin is not talked about?

http://linuxaudioblog.com/?tag=drum-trigger

why isn't this plugin continued or picked up by someone? I my studies on recording, a lot of pros seem to use triggers for drums yet Linux audio, the only 2 plugins I've found seems to be abandoned.

the other one is this from Calf but I can't find it anymore:

curious to find out why it's not used in Linux audio or if we do have something like that out there.

I think most of us 'round here don't actually record analog drums so such things don't have much use if the drum's already sequenced. But its good to have these and be aware of them. I've never had a need for them yet though.

the analog drums I use are from Hydrogen and Drumgizmo.. The example I gave here:
http://linuxaudioblog.com/?tag=drum-trigger

the dudes shows to make the drum kit sound more real by adding the vibrations off of the rest of the kit..

Why not even liven up electronic music a bit by giving that analog or real drum feel? Something different right?
We're supposed to be innovators meaning we try to do what may not have been done yet?!?! :D

not entirely convinced particularly by the kick drum "resonance", it sounds pretty unnatural

Oh I see, you're focused on that resonance thing. I thought you meant physical drums recorded with microphones. Apparently a lot of rock/metal drummers use triggers now to get a consistent "clicky" kick sound without fussing around with the mics. I have a old-school kick drum, and I prefer that sound, but I could use a trigger to get a metal or pop sound... or even convert the kick track to midi and fake a double-bass drum... without losing all the human touches.

Oh yeah.. sounds thin, less thump. My (physical) kick drum just rattles the snares. My cymbals don't ring out when I hit a drum.

I think you could achieve better "realism" with subtle rolls, flams, accents, stick noises. I mean, MIDI defines 3 hihat sounds, 2 ride sounds, and 1 sound for other cymbals. Really there's like 10 ways to hit a cymbal. For example you'll see drummers playing hihat 8th notes alternating between the shoulder and tip of the stick, loud-soft-loud-soft. Sometimes the stick will bounce a little, like t-t-tsss, maybe not intentionally. Tons of bounce/roll stuff on the snare drum. Even the kick drum has some variety.. you can hold the beater down or let it bounce. And this is just what I've learned in the first 6 months...

MDA Beatbox is available, it's been around for ages, but every time I try it I run into bugs and strange behavior. You can't change out the built-in sounds either.

I would love one mostly just to beef up the sound of my cajon, which is my only "drumkit" when I don't want programmed drums. Right now I run it through MDA subsynth to beef up the lows and do a lot of editing and processing to bring out the snare tones. A reliable trigger plugin would save me a lot of work.

I do mess around with all you've mentioned but on hydrogen, that takes major time.. Drumgizmo because of how the kits are recorded gives you excellent room and resonance.. Sounds awesome when mixing instrument per track in Ardour.

The LADSPA trigger examples were just examples.. you can make your own for each kit in Hydrogen and make it as you mentioned tnovelli.
To me it looked promising... :(

I'm planning to release my version of the trigger. The ladspa version isn't good enough. I've already tried to submit a prototype to Calf project but it's still hanging in a pull request for the years. Currently I'm working on an implementation of a trigger for LSP Plugins.

UPD
I've found my rare video. You're not the only one who asks about trigger implementation.

Which sound libraby do you use? It could help to load some new other. There are many in very differend sound styles, which you even can combinate.
I myself got one library drums i like very much for the styles of music i make. And then for added percussion i again have another favorite.

And if the sound doesn't sound exact like i want other plugins like eq/reverb can do a lot quite quick.
I use all of the drumgizmo's kits depending on the style of song.. For Hydrogen, I've made a huge kit out of the Salamander wav samples.
also some of Glen's kits too. the AVL stuff, BigMono for that fat, funky 70s rock feel.. I don't do the techno dance stuff. I try to use the natural sounding kits so the metal/rock/funk style sounds as organic as possible. Even when I was doing hip-hop beats I used the multi-velocity kits from Drumgizmo and Hydrogen.
Drumgizmo is also an excellent tool for learning how to mix a real drum kit in the mix.
