the trouble is i'm getting constant crashes of the system, total freeze, these can happen when using firefox, chromium, particularly watching video; but can also happen in rosegarden

please can anybody help?

Have you checked dmesg, /var/log/messages and syslog?

My Mint 18 froze up frequently the last week. Maybe it was the heatwave but I also noticed that printing via network was extremely slow.

I looked at the cups page (localhost:631) and the were rss subscriptions there?? Dunno what that was and removed them. For all I know that could have been a cause of freezing too.

Indeed a dirty computer can cause freezes and crashes too.

You cleaned the processor and it's cooler too? (between the ribs and so)
er, no, i'm a bit nervous of dissembling that part - manyana

curiously though the problem recurred - let me explain

i noticed after the 'cleaning' appeared to work, that one of the drives was disconnected - so i booted down and reconnected to work on some files in there

i started a download, and hey presto total freeze up as before - now this drive is totally full, i don't know if that has anything to do with it?

ok will do that

meanwhile i noticed that with the full disk drive connected i get freezes, but not when it's disconnected - once cleaned i will try to salvage all the files i need off the drive and report back

er, i think i spoke too soon - all unnecessary drives removed, only things plugged in are mouse keyboard and usb wifi - still freezing up

i would check logs as Luc suggested, but reading them makes no sense to me - stuck again

Exchange them to test. Or remove one by one for a while to test.

ok so here's what i did - i have four sticks of 4g each of ram

i took out all of them and tried each one in turn in the slot nearest the mobo

each time the freezes recurred, but much sooner than with all four in

Re: system crashes

Could you post the output of 'groups'?

I don't see much in that log unfortunately. Is the system up to date? You could try running a memtest, there should be an option for it in the grub.
Maybe install inxi and run 'inxi -Fx'.
