Audio playback problems - fresh KXS install

Hi,

I'm a novice with linux, I can work my way around and have been reading various posts but I'm totally stuck.

I can't get audio to play without a whole lot of messing around and I can't get Reaper to work with wineASIO.

Before I installed wine and reaper, audio would playback fine via youtube. Once wine and wineasio installed no sound would play back if I tried an mp3 via vlc or a youtube video.

In the sound settings if I test the audiocard in the laptop the HDA Intel PCA plays the piano test sound so I've set this to the prefered playback device. I will be using a focusrite solo to record and monitor through eventually but I assume that I should get the basics working first.

Jack is set to alsa->loop->jack

The only way I can get reaper to play back sounds is with the settings as 'direct sound' and the in and out set as HDA Intel PCA. If I choose wineasio I get nothing and if I click the configure asio button Reaper just freezes and I have to restart the computer.

I can get audio to play in Ardour too.
