I really don't trust audacity higher than 2.06. I have a couple new linux installs, and the 2.1x
audacity's are scary. I had a fairly busy audacity session open last night, and when doing some mundane operation,
the whole thing just vanished. Thought i had mouse-rolled to the next desktop,
but no, it just died an instant death. With plenty of ram and diskspace.

I was able to use the recovery facility, but even then,
the recovery dialog text was cut off, just the tops of the text barely visible,
and the panel frozen. Lucky I guessed the correct option.

I think that team needs a serious feature freeze, and a few months of
extensive damage control.
Cheers

My advice would be try other versions, but you've already tried other versions which wouldn't help.
I use 2.1.2 which for me is stable. Tried that version?
Does anyone have a link to 2.1.2? I can only find 2.1.2-1 and 2.1.2-2.
42low wrote:Perhaps you've altered something in system (or another program did) why audacity ain't working no more?
I have a sneaking suspicion it's my [relatively] new HDMI video card.

Still playing around with this....

sudo apt-get audacity would do the job for 2.1.3

perhaps you get the 2.1.2 version with something like:
sudo apt-get audacity 2.1.2
Yep, that would install 2.1.2-1 on my system. There was some question a few posts up between 2.1.2 and 2.1.2-1. I've done 2.1.2-1, the version available in Ubuntu LTS's official repos, and am now looking to try this elusive "2.1.2" with no "-1".
42low wrote:I would go for the 'right now' version if i had to install now. So 2.1.3 with sudo apt-get audacity.
Already tried 2.1.3-0build3~ubuntu16.04 from a different repo, same issue.

FOUND A SOLUTION!

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS also and noticed recently Audacity 2.12 and 2.13 keeps crashes.
Running it from terminal, I was getting the "Double-Zero / Corruption" errors...
Basically, I was getting the SAME exact issues you posted...

Here's what I did....

(1) As Superuser, opened up the file browser ( I use MATE desktop, so I used caja )

(2) I went into the folder /usr/lib

(3) renamed the "dssi" folder to "dssi_old"

(4) ran audacity from terminal ---- IT WORKED!

*** Next I troubleshoot the dssi folder to see which dssi is making audacity crash....

(5) renamed the "dssi_old" folder back to the original folder name "dssi"

(6) copied dssi folder and made a backup copy

(7) deleted a dssi , ran audacity from terminal - audacity kept crashing like before

(8) repeated step 7 until audacity ran without crashing

(9) Identified the bad dssi files in the "/usr/lib/dssi" folder causing the crashes:

*** the file "amsynth-dssi.so", and respectful sub-folder "amsynth_dssi"

(10) copied all the dssi files/sub-folders from backup back into "/usr/lib/dssi" folder

(11) deleted the "bad" amsynth-dssi.so & amsyth-dssi folder from inside /usr/lib/dssi

(12) ran audacity from terminal --- it works now !

I am running Audacity 2.1.3 on Ubuntu 16.04lts ( using the PPA repo from UbuntuHandbook.org )
link to PPA repo page: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... -released/

I hope this helps others out, as this was very frustrating.... Audacity is the best audio editor, so I was determined to figure this out on my own, since it is a MUST have.

You should post bug reports to both audacity and amsynth.

@ Bossco: Are you able to name audio tracks? The reason I ask is that I have Audacity running ok on a Debian AntiX box but I can't name the audio tracks. (I have to write each track name on a separate sheet of paper.)

I'd sure like to see Audacity working fully again as before. It's a must for me too. All seems to work for other platforms, and I was told the linux version should have been ready at the beginning of this year. I'm quite surprised at the delay... :(

yes, i can name audio tracks... i've added tracks and rt-clicked, NAMEd them... no issues

I just have to use the mouse wheel to scroll the tracks thru the window, but everything appears to work now.

I am running the 2.1.3 build from the repo I posted in my previously "SOLVED" post....

Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS , Kernel 4.12.x ( using UKUU app "Ubuntu Kernel Update Utility" )
all software up to date via sudo apt-get update , sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I've copied & pasted the build info from audacity 2.1.3 I'm running:
sorry the paste lost the format of what was copied.

I would show a screenshot, but no way to attach images here im guessing....

If you compiled audacity from source, maybe there's some libraries or other plugins ( dssi, vst, ldspa, etc)
in your /usr/local/... folders causing issues ??? just a guess

for me, just getting rid of the amsynth dssi files fixed the crashes / double-zero corruption / other wierd error messages....
was tricky to figure out, but it was incompatible/bad plugins causing that....

wish i could be of more help

@Bossco

Ok your solution work !

mint 18.2 / 4.10.0-22-lowlatency
audacity daily build 2.1.2+git20170720+r5504+17~ubuntu16.10.1

From my part or because an unintuitive UPGRADE SCENARIO from TRUSTY to XENIAl with KXSTUDIO.

WHAT WASN'T RIGHT

1. old kxstudio*.list file pointing to trusty

2. not done alongside migration scenario :

If you're using a system newer or equal to Debian 9 (Stretch) or Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) you'll also need to enable GCC5 packages.
You can do so by installing this deb file - kxstudio-repos-gcc5.deb, or manually by running this:

# Install required dependencies if needed
sudo apt-get install libglibmm-2.4-1v5

# Download package file
wget https://launchpad.net/~kxstudio-debian/ ... o1_all.deb

# Install it
sudo dpkg -i kxstudio-repos-gcc5_9.4.6~kxstudio1_all.deb

Many thanks Bossco

@Bossco:
I posted your "discovery" at the Audacity forum for others to benefit from and/or test out, HERE.

(I might have to do some testing too, as my current version, although very useable, doesn't allow to name tracks (hence my previous question to you).)

Bossco wrote:(9) Identified the bad dssi files in the "/usr/lib/dssi" folder causing the crashes:

I can confirm that there is a problem with amsynth-dssi.so because there has just been another case reported on the Audacity forum, and just renaming "amsynth-dssi.so" to "amsynth-dssi.so.bak" (and log out, then back in again) fixed the problem.

However, I've tried installing amsynth 1.5.1-2build2 from the main Xenial repository, along with audacity 2.1.2-1, also from the main Xenial repository, on Xubuntu 16.04 LTS 64-bit, and no problem.

Is there a specific version of amsynth-dssi.so required to cause this issue?
