Moving from a USB3 port to a USB2 port seems to have got things working reasonably. I'm still a bit concerned about the amount of mess in my setup; is there a good series of steps for ensuring a sane JACK1 installation?

I've got a shiny Komplete Audio 6, which has been widely reported as very linux-friendly. Plugged it in with my existing interface (edirol UA-4FX), was able to switch to it and play sound. Changing sample rate led to trouble.
Next step: disconnect old interface, start playing with configuration. I ran into this problem (cannot register object path):

Noting that switching to JACK1 seems to have worked for others, I added the JACK1 ppa and installed jack1:

Several permutations of installing/uninstalling jack1 and jack2 later, nothing works. Clicking "configure" in Cadence does nothing but dump this into its log:

What are the likely causes of issues with this card? I'm running 12.04 with KDE. I do have pulseaudio and would really prefer to keep it as I have a few Steam games installed that prefer it.
UPDATE: Installing the "jackd1" package appears to have things moving again; I guess that isn't done automatically by the jack1 package? Everything falls apart whenever I try to stop and restart the JACK server though:
