Zoom R8/R16/R24

Post by Tarrasque »

Hello

Anyone knows if any of those work (as audio interfaces) with KXStudio / Ardour?

Apparently they do but I've been trying to get a working config with my R8 all day today with no luck. Audio output seems fine (tested through speaker-test) but input is distorted and glitchy.

I use an R16. It will work as long as you are using 16.04 - it requires at least a 4.4 kernel. I'm using it with Cadence and jack2, in synchronous mode. As it is a usb interface it should work best with 3 periods/buffer or with buffer sizes that allow even millisecond latencies a la http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/list_of ... _interface

Probably due to my not so great laptop, the lowest latencies I can use seems to be with ( 192 / 48000 ) * 2 = 8 ms, but that's plenty low for me.

As a caveat, all of the quirk/kernel related stuff that happened for kernel 4.4 was for Zoom R16/R24. I'm not sure if any of that applies for R8.

Zoom R8 works as an interface. Didn't check the controller functions yet. However I have problems to adjust the volume via the KMix faders, which is not possible. But I can live with it....

Also what is strange with the R8. It works pretty fine when setting the sampling frequency in CADENCE to 48 kHz. However, with 44.1 kHz I get a crackling tone every some seconds in the playback. With 88.2 kHz this is even worse. I made a test with a DAC nano today and here with 44.1 kHz I didn't spot a problem. Is it possible that somehow the driver of the R8 in combination with Linux has a problem at 44.1 kHz?

I've owned an R8 since shortly after the R line launched, and 24 bit/96 kHz works fine for me, with Reaper Linux native beta, Ardour, etc., and has worked since 12.04 or 12.10 or so, I wanna say The desktop volume manager works, too, with LXQt, XFCE, and Pantheon in Ubuntu Studio 16.04.2 with KxStudio and Elementary OS's DE's PPA's enabled.
