Which desktop manager do you prefer and why?

I picked other, only because I've used the apps that I use on both GNOME and KDE. Personally, I don't think it matters that much which desktop environment you use for music since it's really the music application(s) itself that is important. So long as I can work with the application intuitively, I don't really care what GUI toolkit it's using. :)

I voted for GNOME in the poll, but that really doesn't tell the whole story. I'm using GNOME on my studio box because it's the default WM for Ubuntu Studio. My other machine is running OpenSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1. So, I use both GNOME and KDE and there are things I like and dislike about each. I'm considering switching the studio box to a lighter-weight desktop environment in an effort to conserve memory and processor cycles though.

I primarily use icewm when using intense apps. I like it because it's super light, functional, and elegant.

Using ion3. This one is *great* for application development/testing.

For audio work, I'm not sure ion3 would be a natural choice, because many audio apps don't like being resized much. I got hooked to ion3 already though, so that's what I'm using :).

Using KDE because I like it. But anything except Gnome as can't get along with it will do. As long as I can set it to "focus exclusive under mouse" and "single click to open files and applications", something Gnome apps fail to respect. With any pc that can handle audio, the desktop soedn't matter much. Unless you're at the limit of your machine perhaps. But then you like living dangerous...

I like XFCE for it is easy to set up and has a good balance between comfort and slickness. Under 64Studio I use KDE35 - great also, KDE4 and GNOME are too buggy/unpredictable for my taste.

I use openbox. It's very simple and lean. But since I am an old KDE user, I use a KDE layer on top of openbox. So I have an environment I am used to + the simplicity of openbox. Pure KDE is too heavy, I don't need it all. Openbox allows Gnome stuff as well. The windows management is taken care of by openbox though.
