What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

I always go for LTS (long term support) releases. Given the amount of internal memory (3 GB?) I'd try if Mint w/ Gnome3/Wayland works. Might be sluggish. Otherwise: install an LTS version of Mint/Ubuntu with Xorg (and Mate or Cinnamon, if Cinnamon still works in Xorg that is...).

Considering the fact that the chance is almost nil that your system is still 32 bit you should try the 64 bit version. If that don't work, try to install the 32 bit one.

BTW Backup your old data!!!!! If you install Linux, chances are that you're gonna overwrite your old Linux partition.

Yes - I am already busy making a backup. This is going to be a complete restart where everything has to be reinstalled. That's why it took me so long to find the motivation to upgrade to a newer Linux Mint version.

So it has to be Linux Mint 19, and I like Cinnamon. Further it has to have LTS. But how about 19, 19.1 and 19.2...?

Those minor version updates are things like security patches and bug fixes. Get the latest one.

Same here. So I'm still on Mint 17. See no reason to upgrade yet. My PC is of relatively low spec, like yours. So I'll wait for reports about Wayland as a replacement of Xorg.

I am almost ready making my backups. It happens too often lately that I cannot work with interesting audio programs because of my old operating system, so I will do the upgrade probably today.
