KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

According to my experiences: Yes. It's very user-friendly.

You may install the librazik-apt-non-fr package https://librazik.tuxfamily.org/doc2/com ... apt-non-fr. This might help a lot for all other languages than French.

Hi, the LibraZiK main developer here, aiming to answer to a few questions below.

But it's French centric, which can be a problem for those who learned German or Spanish as their foreign language.
Not really. It's not "French centric". It is "French focused", I'm mainly working on a French doc and on the French translation for the software GUI available in LibraZiK.

The software GUI language are like any other software in Debian and pretty much every Linux distribution: it depends on how you position your "locale". Meaning that, as an example, if you position the locale for German and a German translation is available in the software, then you'll get the GUI in German. If a German translation is not available for this software, it'll fall back to the software original language (usually English).

At the side of this, there are a dozen of software in LibraZiK that I had to patch straight into the sources before packaging in order to get a French translated GUI, this being because they don't have a proper translation mechanism cooked in. This is where the "librazik-apt-nonfr" package come into game: it contains those software without the French patch (ie: usually in English) which is what you want to use if you're not francophone.

Summary: don't think that because one of my main focus is on francophone readers, then you'll enforced to get a French GUI. Think more that: it's a usual English (+ others languages) GUI with a bunch of improvements for the French readers. As long as you're using the "librazik-apt-nonfr" and your locale is correctly set up. That's it.

About the doc in French, there are more than 1000 pages of documentation in French. I'm usually using an "easy French" when writing in the hope that any average on-line translator will cope with it. For the few tests I've been doing, it works very well.

Moreover, I know that LibraZiK-2 is used by a bunch of non-francophone people (at the top of my head: Italian, German, American, English) and they are fine with that. In the past, they helped me to check if nothing is enforced in French. As far as I know, there is nothing enforced into French but a few part of claudia-launcher which I'll probably fix when back to my computer in August (see below).

How different is Librazik from standard Debian please?
LibraZiK-2 is a standard Debian Stretch + Stretch backport repository + Stretch security repository + LibraZiK-2 repository. The LibraZiK 2 repository contains a lots of music software that are not packaged in Debian + a lot of music software already packaged in Debian but in a newer version + a RT (real time) and a LL (low latency) kernels + music optimizations stuff + a bunch of other things. You can read a list of packaged software & version here : https://librazik.tuxfamily.org/doc2/paquets. LibraZiK-2 is made with MATE as a desktop environment but should probably work with any other DE. I've never checked that, please let me know if you do try.

If I installed Librazik is it enough like Debian that I can just use it? Does it use standard Debian repos?
Yes, and yes, see above.

I hope that it clarifies what LibraZiK is. FYI, I'll be in a tour for the July month, starting in 2 days, meaning pretty much out of the web and will probably not be able to answer messages here if requested. I'll recheck this thread when I'll be back from the tour.

All that being said, KXstudio is a wonderful project, and I'd recommend you (if you already use a KXstudio distro) to check with Falktx how he's seeing the coming next months. From the discussions I had with him recently, it doesn't seems at all that KXstudio is abandoned. He's just in a break.

Most importantly, have fun and happy musics to you all!
Cheers.
Olivier

Thanks Michael for such a comprehensive reply(sorry my reply is not edited down. I am on my phone and it takes forever!).

I can tell you that apt-get will hold certain packages back unless you use apt-get dist-upgrade. Alternatively use apt instead of apt-get.

As different as KXStudio is, compared to Debian or Ubuntu. You have the applications, the kernel, the tweaks and the documentation, that you need to transform vanilla Debian into professional audio tailored operating system.
I am an experienced Debian and audio user but have forgotten most of my schoolboy French. If I installed Librazik is it enough like Debian that I can just use it? Does it use standard Debian repos? That was the thrust of my original question, sorry for being unclear (I have never used the KXStudio distro, only the repos, so the comparison doesn't help). TIA
You can use only the repos, on a standard Debian stable. And if you add 'librazik-apt-non-fr', it all be in English. The other thing that you should do, is to add a translator addon on your browser (you don't need to do this, if using chromium of chrome), so that you can read the large documentation.

To start the live session in English - when the grub menu opens, before you start the live session, press Tab key and modify the language and the keyboard layout to 'en_US.UTF-8' and 'us' respectively

Technically they are the same, but apt full-upgrade has a slightly nicer "interface", if I remember well.

Hi,

I decided to switch to ubuntu 18 LTS with KX repository after I tried apt-get dist-upgrade/ apt full-upgrade, which both did not work - anyway....
Everything is fine :D - the only thing I miss is the low-latency kernel - or mayby the realtime kernel in future (never worked with it til now).
How can I switch this ?
Thanks for any help

With most distributions you can install a low-latency https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/kernel/ and/or a realtime https://packages.debian.org/search?keyw ... x-image-rt kernel via the package manager.

I actually feel pretty lost and bewildered at the moment. I can only describe my modern KDE Linux experience as a 'horrible broken mess', it's the only words I can use.

Back in 2011/12 I was using Mint KDE as my main distro and was running infinite length desktop sessions with ZERO problems or crashes. My main use was video editing on KDEnlive, web browsing, and playing general media. I would NEVER log out, put it to sleep/hibernate, restart etc. I would run single desktop sessions for months and months on end. Never a crash or a reason to end the session.

I then started using KXStudio on a separate machine exclusively for music production, again, nice and stable and, learning curve aside, it did what I wanted.

Fast forward to today and my desktop session is GUARANTEED to contain failures and crashes. If web browsing is one of the activities, then there is a HAL style 100% failure prediction that the desktop session that will require a full reboot/log out.

I tried staying with Mint KDE, but that no longer supported/developed and is on an old kernel version with new repositories etc.

I tried KDE Neon and putting the KXStudio repositories on that, but the desktop was unstable and the whole mess with Activities/Desktops...

I have just switched to Kubuntu and it is awful! It looks gorgeous in parts, horrible and clunky in others, and things just seem so unstable.

What has happened to these distros lately? I remember trying Kubuntu a few years ago and it was ;lovely and slick. This latest Kubuntu is, well, frankly, a horrible broken mess! I can barely see the desktop half the time for the number of notifications!

I have spent the best part of a year experimenting with distros. Instead of being creative I am managing systems. The distros I used and loved are wrecks of their former selves...

TLDR: Where do I go for a stable music production/recording STABLE distro?

I think my current options are:
1 - Use the old KXStudio ISO
2 - Ubuntu Studio
3 - Use Debian KDE?
4 - I noticed Puppy does a Ubuntu based flavour... would I be able to put the KXStudio distros on a Puppy distro??!

I would ideally like to use KX Studio repos, but I have found installing them on A N Other distro things gets a bit messy and it just doesn't work 100% as it used to from the distro. Jack used to be pretty solid on the ISO, but it's all over the place when I use the repos on some other distro.

I tend to use Linux friendly laptops/desktops from Dell, HP, IBM/Lenovo, and have had trouble free Linux computing for a decade, until the last year or two. What is going on?

If I have to abandon KDE then so be it...

I want STABILITY, CREATIVITY, where do I go?!!?

I've been using linux since 1993, and I have tried KDE few times, and every time there has been experience like you state. And also I have set it up few times to some of my family members which are more familiar with windows, and same thing, it needs to be replaced with some other desktop env.

I am using Xubuntu, and no stability problems. I mostly replace window manager there with something which has more configurability, but most likely those I use are suitable for coder-mindset people who want to spend time to fine adjust their wm behaviour.

I'm using cinnamon now since some years on my pro audio system, and that is, what I install on any PC when people ask me for a linux desktop. Even my mother-in-law which is 86 years old now, getting that from me some years ago. Not a single issue arrive, and, don't think that she didn't use it, she is active in the communal society and leads a sport club. She have a massive online presence and use hear PC several hours a day.
On the road again.
