MUSIC DISTROS

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

I'm currently using and enjoying Librazik. (Librazik-2)
There are others that are good too; Ubuntu Studio is good, although perhaps not as "light" as I like.
AVlinux is also very nice.

So much good stuff to try out! :) If you are comfortable with installing your own RT or LL kernel, I suppose many distros will do just fine. Mint, AntiX, Bodhi...

I also want to put my vote for LibraZiK. I got a feeling that many people either never heard or overlooked this Linux audio distribution. It does not matter what is your user level, because it has everything and it works. It has impressively large collection of up to date applications. Arguably more than KXStudio and Archlinux+AUR. Ordered in many audio-video menu subcategories and good documentation for any of it. Its based on Debian Stable and it has the proper configurations expected from multimedia distros. It uses the latest version of Mate as desktop environment with custom applications menu, has both lowlatency and realtime kernels in the repos, both qjackctl and cadence are installed by default. And similar to KXStudio, you can add the LibraZiK repositories on top of Debian stable or based on Debian stable distribution. For more info, here is the website. You can use a page translator addon to translate on English. You will need it, because the wiki and the documentation in there are quite large.

Hello Linuxmusicians!
There is a little community-project since some years, basing on Linux Mint and the KXStudio-Repositories:
https://mayastudio.tumblr.com/ [outdated] https://qianastudio.tumblr.com/ [outdated]

The newest release is basing on Linux Mint 19.1, MATE, 64bit and as LTS-version it gets updates untill 2023:

..for all that love KXStudio, Linux Mint, MATE and multimedia. :)

BIG THANX to falkTX (KXStudio) and Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint) for giving us this stable base.

Enjoy!

Nice work on qstudio, looking fw to using it more later on. First time Mint (Mate?) also, and quite pleasant so far.

I'm trying to go full Linux music production on one PC. For some reason I started with Planet CCRMA on top of Fedora 30. That is NOT ready to go but I got it going after about 4 hours of messing around following the instructions (which of course, sometimes don't work or appear to refer to an alternate universe). It was really working great. Then I rebooted and couldn't get it to come alive using the RT kernel. Everyone's got their limit and that was it for me.

Then I installed Ubuntu Studio and that's where I am now. To get some things I had to add the KX-whatever repository. I'm having some challenges getting a couple apps to sync but that's most likely down to those apps rather than the distro.

and another one, this time with Turbo Boost! so couldn't resist sharing it here, from http://www.modiciaos.cloud/index.html:
We are a team of 10 developers, graphic designers and enthusiasts who offer their work for free by passion. Our mission is to make available and support for free, without license limits, this complete and innovative OS that derives from the Open Source philosophy and wants to be a free and Open Source tool for professionals who believe that GNU / Linux is equal or better than systems operational closed.

MODICIA O.S. Desktop Ultimate is based on Debian and Xubuntu-core and is compatible with 98% of Ubuntu LTS.

A) Turbo Boost processors are active by default. B) Swappiness is reduced to 10% and programs are faster than 25% and consequently also increase the life of the SSD disk. C) Data in RAM memory is compressed with a speed reading them and write more than 20%, Wine HQ, Samba is already configured and active.

Everything is ready and configured, applications and tools that you can not find in any other system. The programs are not only installed, they are configured. We think that this operating system can replace Mac and Win without fearing comparisons.

Graphically beautiful, complete and performing using only 450 MB of RAM. The Windows theme is the same for all applications. The theme, buttons and icons like the VLC skin were created specifically for MODICIA O.S. Each program and application has been modified in use and appearance.

MODICIA O.S. using only 365 Mb of RAM. Activated by default the Turbo Boost of the processors. Reduced the swappiness to 10%. Programs are cautioned in ram with an opening speed increased by 25%. The data scanned and read in the ram are compressed to avoid using the swap and have a 20% higher speed.

Hi, I'm experimenting with an installation of the last KDE Neon and kxstudio repo on a new machine assembled with firewire port and intel i7 9700 coffee lake processor.
Everything works currently, even with the update to the new Kxstudio repo.
The only problem encountered is for graphics acceleration,
since the UHD 630 GPU does not yet have a complete implementation from the 4.16 lowlatency kernel, I tried to install the 5.0.29 lowlatency kernel but without success for the graphics.
It appears that the new kernels for 19.04 and 19.10 should provide compatibility with the new intel GPUs, but KDE NEON only releases on systems based on LTS distro. I think I try to manually install the new kernels ...
However, it could be a Qstudio 64 alternative, but it is currently based on the 4.16 lowlatency kernel (18.04 LTS):
- Does anyone know if there will be any releases of Qstudio 64 for 19.04 or 19.10?
- Has anyone tested if updating the new Kxstudio repo on Qsudio 64 breaks something?

I also fear that something might break when the old Kxstudio repo will be disabled.
Regards

- Does anyone know if there will be any releases of Qstudio 64 for 19.04 or 19.10?
-> There is a new Release of QStudio64 out since some days!
It is basing on Linux Mint 19.1/Ubuntu 18.04 like before - but is upgradable to Linux Mint 19.3 and Kernel 5.x without problems: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3838

So the new concept is to upgrade to higher Linux Mint-versions with the Linux Mint update-manager!

BTW: QStudio64 19.1 gets updates until 2023 and offers a modern and stable platform to make music and art. Our aim is NOT to have always the latest Ubuntu base or Kernels because of stability - more a system that is working well with a lot of different hardware and situations of production.

Upgrading to higher Linux Mint versions and kernels is doing by your own risk.

Otherwise: If you got hardware problems because of newer hardware an upgrade could help!

Our test-upgrade with QStudio64 19.1 from Linux Mint 19.1 > 19.3 was running succesfully.

- Has anyone tested if updating the new Kxstudio repo on Qstudio 64 breaks something?
Yes, it was tested without problems.

It's recommend to upgrade the KXStudio-Repositories and to running all updates: https://kx.studio/Repositories

(-> Not necessary in the new QStudio64 19.1-SE Release !)

maybe this answer is coming late - but maybe it helps (others).
