AV Linux 2018: upgrade from AV Linux 2017 ?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

AV Linux 2018: upgrade from AV Linux 2017 ?

Post by mk1967 »

It has been my pleasure to set up AV Linux 2018 on one of my desktop pcs yesterday afternoon. Thanks a lot for this system. :D

On my Dell Latitude E-6430 notebook with an existing AV Linux 2017 I tried to set up AV Linux 2018 to replace that 2017 version but there is an error: the 2018 live system doesn't start on the E-6430. Is it possible do do a direct upgrade from AV Linux 2017 to 2018 ?

Or does this happen automatically by doing

Code: Select all

apt dist-upgrade
(which I have done already) ?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Just to add: Maybe it's possible just to modify /etc/apt/sources.list and do dist-upgrade?

Here is my AVLinux 2017 sources.list:

Code: Select all

# DEBIAN STRETCH
deb http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/debian/ stretch contrib non-free main
deb-src http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/debian/ stretch main non-free contrib

# DEBIAN UNSTABLE (AKA SID)
# deb http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib
# deb-src http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/debian/ unstable contrib non-free main

# LIQUORIX (OPTIONAL KERNELS)
# deb http://liquorix.net/debian sid main
# deb-src http://liquorix.net/debian sid main

# AVL Kernels
deb http://www.bandshed.net/kernels/apt/ jessie main
deb http://www.bandshed.net/kernels/apt/ stretch main

# UBUNTUZILLA (Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird Builds)
deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt/ all main

#CINELERRA 5
deb [trusted=yes] https://cinelerra-cv.org/five/pkgs/debian jessie main
# deb-src [trusted=yes] https://cinelerra-cv.org/five/pkgs/debian jessie main
And this is the one from my 32 bit AVLinux 2018 (I have modified it to the server here in Germany):

Code: Select all

# DEBIAN STRETCH
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ stretch main non-free contrib

# LIQUORIX (Alternative Kernels)
deb http://liquorix.net/debian sid main
# deb-src http://liquorix.net/debian sid main

deb http://www.bandshed.net/kernels/apt/ stretch main

# UBUNTUZILLA (Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird Builds)

#CINELERRA 5
deb [trusted=yes] https://cinelerra-cv.org/five/pkgs/debian stretch main
# deb-src [trusted=yes] https://cinelerra-cv.org/five/pkgs/debian stretch main

# WINEHQ.ORG

Hi,

AV Linux works from the ISO image not a repository so you can upgrade 2017 and it will get all of the Debian and KXStudio updates but for some of the new customizations and AV Linux specific packaging you need to install from the AV Linux 2018 ISO.

Do you mean the 2018 ISO doesn't boot from a USB Key?

Yes, unfortunately :( .
I use to get the message - at the very beginning:

Code: Select all

FAT-fs (sdb1): IO charset ascii not found
mount: mounting /dev/sdb1 on /live/medium failed: invalid argument
I've tried to find out something about it in several debian forums (for example http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=130665 ) - it seemed to me it's an old problem - but I don't really think it's a problem of the FAT filesystem on my USB key for Thunar can read all the files on it.

My other attempt using the installation DVD on a 32 bit computer did work.

Try a USB key made with DD

See in the AV Linux release announcement:
*KNOWN ISSUES

-KPTI will introduce a performance hit, it's debatable how much it will impact Audio work but it does have an impact.
*KPTI can be disabled which will restore performance but leave your machine vulnerable to the 'Meltdown' exploit.
-Booting is slower on UEFI computers and getting to login takes longer.
-A recent update of Unetbootin no longer works to create bootable LiveUSB Keys of AV Linux 2018.
-AV Linux contains a new AV Linux DD LiveUSB Writer to write LiveUSB Keys with DD
-For those on other Deb-based Distros this is packaged here:
http://www.bandshed.net/packages/avl2us ... -1_all.deb
-Otherwise writing to USB Key with DD from commandline will also work.

... yes I had been too lazy to read the file before  . I had set up the key with Unetbootin under Ubuntu 16.04.

Thank you very much. I'm going to set it up under my working AVLinux 2017 (or is it necessary to use AVLinux 2018 ? ).

Hi,

You can use the "Make a ISO Hybrid bootable USB Key" application found in the 'AV Linux Assistant' in AV Linux 2017, it is basically the same thing as the 'new' standalone writing tool.
