What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

From what you've described, none of the results you found seem surprising to me. I think you just need more experience with these tools to understand what their roles are. It takes some learning, but so does any audio software on any platform.

First, it sounds like maybe you are not setting up JACK right. Guitarix is a jack app. Get comfortable with Jack if you want to use it. Check out http://libremusicproduction.com/article ... arted-jack for a good guide.

Next up, guitar into your Mic-In isn't a great plan. Its a hi impedance signal to a low impedance input and usually its not as clean an input as a dedicated audio soundcard. I tried this too when I was first starting and the results weren't great. A poor sound in doesn't give guitarix much to work with. But its something at least. There are some really cheap guitar interfaces that can work better than an internal soundcard though.

If you are using the plugin version of guitarix in ardour then its quite a different workflow, because guitarix is actually broken out into a whole bunch of different plugins. If you want effects you'll have to go add them. If you want a distorted guitar sound turn up the gain. You should look at that LMP page linked above. In addition to that there are some other resources on guitarix:
I made an episode of the Open Source Musician where I demoed a little of guitarix, you could give that a listen [1]. There is also an episode where we played many tracks and nearly all of them used guitarix in plugin or standalone form [1]. Finally guitarix has a fairly dated page on how to get a good tone, but the principles still apply for the most part [3]. So pick your preferred medium.

How to record this? The guitarix above 0db, and then use Compressor or Limiter or so??
Turn down the master volume knob.

The biggest knob in guitarix. Look at the link http://libremusicproduction.com/article ... d-guitarix under the heading 'Amp Head Controls'.

If ardour is receiving a signal louder than it should be then you need to turn down the source (ideally), in this case you need to turn down the output of guitarix.

"you never ever get decent sound when plugged in a guitar directly in the computer"

Most people miss out on perfecting some aspect of guitar recording, myself included, because it's pretty easy
to get good results, and really excellent results take more time and effort, and so are not often pursued,
if even needed.

Some people have never adjusted their nut, bridge, and pickups, while using 5 year old strings,
the gauge of which was long ago forotten, but will rattle off great tomes of propaganda about tone.

It's not easy to set up a great guitar, and then configure multiple softwares that replicate
everything found in a 60's recording studio, when Jimi Hendrix roamed the earth.
But well worth the effort, and good fun when things start taking shape.
Cheers
