kxstudio repos + which OS? What do you like?

Re: kxstudio repos + which OS? What do you like?
Again, Thanks all!
I think I'm going to take a conservative approach and go with Debian-stable. If that doesn't work out then I'll go with Mint 18.
Again, thanks everyone. You gave me some great direction for my research and it comes much appreciated.

I about to do Debian Unstable + KXStudio. Your "almost" gave me pause... Could you elaborate?FaTony wrote:Debian Testing + KXStudio repos. Almost no problems.

I kinda forgot what problems I was referring to. I think the only real problem was that fontconfig from KXStudio overwrote good Debian fonts with crappy Ubuntu fonts. I can't remember any other problem.finotti wrote:I about to do Debian Unstable + KXStudio. Your "almost" gave me pause... Could you elaborate?

I use Ubuntu Budgie 16.04 with KXStudio repository. Works great and Budgie is really nice.

Re: kxstudio repos + which OS? What do you like?
Hmm, it looks like that problem is not fixed yet. If you're gonna go Debian, before installing KXStudio repo lock the following packages: fontconfig, fonconfig-config, libfontconfig1. Do NOT install versions of these packages that have "ubuntu" in them.finotti wrote:Thank you very much for the reply!

Re: kxstudio repos + which OS? What do you like?
I don't have access to my "test computer now", but I think that carla packages need fontconfig... So, does it just make it look bad or does it cause other problems?FaTony wrote:Hmm, it looks like that problem is not fixed yet. It looks really bad on my monitor. I have stable Carla installed, I dunno why you'd want the git version.finotti wrote:So, does it just make it look bad or does it cause other problems?

After your comment, I did go with carla (non-git), but it seems that it does not work with Windows plugins, or at least I could not make it work. (I was trying this one: http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?pl ... B2&id=2493) Googling around, it seems that you need the git version for that. Also, to have the lv2 plugin (to use in ardour), it seems you need the git version:
Code: Select all
# apt install carla-lv2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following additional packages will be installed:
carla-data carla-git fontconfig-config libfontconfig1 libfontconfig1-dev python3-pyqt5.qtsvg
Recommended packages:
carla-vst mod-ui python3-pyqt5.qtopengl
The following packages will be REMOVED:
carla
The following NEW packages will be installed:
carla-data carla-git carla-lv2 python3-pyqt5.qtsvg
The following packages will be upgraded:
fontconfig-config libfontconfig1 libfontconfig1-dev
3 upgraded, 4 newly installed, 1 to remove and 26 not upgraded.

Re: kxstudio repos + which OS? What do you like?
Thanks! It's great to know you hand around here! (It was your posts that I've seen about using Windows plugins.)falkTX wrote:I make carla, and I'm telling you the carla-git package is more stable than the normal carla one.
Please use carla-git package, specially since you seem to want to use windows plugins.
I am trying to be careful to not mix system files from KXStudio/Ubuntu with my Debian (Sid/unstable) system. I was going to take the plunge on carla-git (which pulls versions of libfontconfig1-dev, fontconfig-config, libfontconfig1 only), but to install all the packages necessary to run Windows plugins it would also pull jack from Ubuntu, which makes me a bit more reluctant:
Code: Select all

Re: kxstudio repos + which OS? What do you like?
I use Ubuntu-mate + compiz+ kxstudio repos.
1.For me, it's very useful by using compiz for music production. I usually mixing 30+ tracks in Ardour ,but my laptop only owns a real screen. One screen is not enough for mixing, so I always extend my ardour mixer window to 4 virtual screens long. Then I can quickly switch screens by hotkey to handle diferent tracks. I only found I can do this way by compiz.
2.Sometime we need to compare different midi tracks to make sure if our ideas are implemented correctly? (Use right notes in a chord). There is a simple module of Compiz can tune transparency of windows very easily. I often compare by this way:
The foreground window is half transparent,so I can compare it to background one. Yah,guitar 3th 7th notes are right, bass root note right, singer's melody note is stay on right chord tone....etc. It make my job easier.
