gentoostudio

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Very cool. I've always been curious about gentoo so I might actually give it a try one day with this.

I'm going to give this a try. Can I install KXstudio repositories on top of it? Would that make sense to do?

Edit: my main plan is to have a 64 bit audio optimized OS running on my Thinkpad laptop with an I5 procesor, a solid state drive, and an 8 input firewire device.

You can ask kxstudio for build a kxstudio-overlay like pro-audio.

I can't believe I just spent so many hours trying to do this  I could have written a symphony in that time. I have a new appreciation for the packagers out there who make audio distros possible for us regular people to use.

EDIT: Sorry I was just frusterated. Looks like a cool idea but seems like a pretty involved process configuring the kernel specifically to my machine.

That would be a huge waste of effort, I think. A collaboration with pro-audio would be a much saner approach.

I'm in the process of giving Gentoo a try (for the second time, after many years). But I'm in no rush and I'm proceeding slowly.

@proaudio overlay
For anyone interested in this, the proaudio overlay has been removed from gentoo's overlay list, which means it's no longer available through layman and no longer mirrored on github.
It's been removed because it had too many (quality) issues which weren't getting fixed.
See https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=607596

We (currently 5 people, see https://github.com/orgs/gentoo-audio/people) decided to start a new overlay and add/pull in only packages that we use and can maintain. So far it's still pretty empty, so don't expect it to be a replacement for the proaudio overlay at this point in time, but we're working hard at adding more stuff. Though we do want to guarantee quality to prevent the issues the proaudio overlay had.
This is our current list of things to do https://github.com/gentoo-audio/audio-overlay/issues
It's not in layman yet, but will be once we create the PR to add it to the list, I'd expect that we do so next week once we have a couple of useful packages.

If anyone wants to help out and add/maintain a package that would be great. Feel free to either let us know here or join #proaudio-overlay on freenode.

For example: About Gentoo Studio
Gentoo Studio is a source-based Linux audio production system based on Gentoo Linux, for people who want a Linux audio system optimized for their specific computer hardware.

Gentoo Studio consists of three install choices: minimal, basic and complete. A minimal install provides an audio-ready base system with no desktop environment and only basic JACK control software. A basic install provides no desktop environment, but includes basic software to start recording and editing audio and MIDI. A complete install contains Xfce4, a variety of audio and MIDI software, and an array of plugins.
Use cases:
  • You want a basic audio-ready system with nothing installed because you want to set things up in a very specific way. Minimal is for you.
  • You want to choose a desktop environment other than Xfce4 but otherwise want a basic audio-ready system with basic audio and MIDI software installed. You will choose your own sets of plugins. Basic is for you.
  • You want to install a full-fledged audio-ready system complete with an Xfce4 desktop environment. Complete is for you.

https://gentoostudio.org/?p=490 Bye-bye, Beta
I am officially declaring Gentoo Studio to be out of beta. For the most part, it installs well either manually or using the install script, and all of the components that make Gentoo Studio Gentoo Studio actually work.

As usual, please continue to let me know if you have any issues, and I will do the best I can to help.

The proaudio overlay is still usable but must be installed manually. I am the only one still working on it, that when I get some free time. I fixed the most important things like the ones that was making parts of that overlay to fail to work. I removed some outdated software, it can still be some of them lying around.

I also updated many ebuilds to recent software versions, but I just don't have enough free time to really be able to maintain that entire overlay. In short, I maintain the ebuilds for the software I am using, and when portage complain about other ebuilds, I will fix if it is an easy fix and the software is not outdated, or I will remove them without mercy otherwise. Which imply, feel free to contribute, most issues are easy to fix, it just take some time to do it. Anyway, If you want to contribute, it would be better to contribute to the new overlay.

To install that overlay follow http://proaudio.tuxfamily.org/wiki/inde ... N_directly
and to incorporate it into portage, see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Ebuild_repository#Layman
Instead of that last step, you can also copy only the ebuilds you want to use into your personal overlay.

Glad to hear there's still some life in the overlay but a shame there are not more contributing by the sounds of it. I don't use gen/funtoo these days but if I ever move away from 'just works' easy distros then it would be back to the *ntoo.

I think both overlays will coexist for a while. They don't provide the same software at the exception of ladish. I prefer the way proaudio manage ladish because it doesn't blok the portage packages which depends on lash. It will remain so until that mess is fixed in portage. I prefer to have a working overlay with a workaround solution for the actual state of portage - that just work for the user, than an overlay that depend on an hypothetical future state of portage and mess with its actual state.

Does anyone know why gentoostudio (http://gentoostudio.org/) is offline?
In the forum (Gentoo Forums - Gentoo Studio: A Gentoo Linux Professional Audio Workstation https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-9 ... t-450.html) audiodef didn't post anything about it.
