Linux-Produced CD Released on Albany

Post by studio32 »

"Chamber Music of Jeremy Gill" was released on the Albany record label
today. I served as co-producer and recording engineer for this project
which features performances from some of the finest chamber music
soloists and ensembles on stage today. (Parker String Quartet, Mimi
Stillman, Charles Abramovic, and the Extension Brass Ensemble)

As testament to the incredible advancements within the open source audio
community in recent years, this project was recorded and mastered using
exclusively OSS. Specifically, the sessions were tracked
(24bit/88.2kHz) in Ardour and mastered using Jamin and TimeMachine.
Additionally, all computers involved in the production process were
running Studio64, a Debian-based multimedia distribution of GNU/Linux.

Greg

What type of audio interface where they using on their systems? I'm really wanting to move to Ardour full time very soon. Also, how do you pan a track to the right of left channel I've not figured that out yet.

I'd also be interested in the audio interface they used to record. As far as panning goes, make sure you have the editor mixer up, and look at the bottom of the interface, right after the post-fader effects area. You'll see two identical looking widgets on top of each other with a little line that you can drag to pan.

Well thank you Nathan. I am working with a local guy to add some keyboard and bass to his songs and I'm going to using Ardour to do all of the recording work because he is on a Macbook pro and is recording at 16 bit so I won't need to have an external 24-bit interface.

No problem. Sounds like a cool project. Are you running the keyboard in via MIDI interface?

Via a quarter inch jack into a mixing board.

Hi all,

Sorry it took me a few days to reply -- nobody emailed to let me know my LAU post had been duplicated here...

The short answer to the equipment question: we captured the performances with a matched pair of Neumann KM183s and KM184s running through Grace preamps (w/ADCs) which fed the computer via a RME Hammerfall.

I've posted a few audio clips:

Enjoy!

Hi Greg,

Great to have you here and thanks for the files, I'm gonna listen to it!

I copy some interesting messages from the LAU list sometimes... Maybe I should have told you...

Feel free to share what you want, give advices etc.
There is also a 'rehearsal room' for the established members, so you are able to put some songs more protected and 'hidden' on the internet if that's what you want..

Of course this is a good place too.

Thanks!
