P2P web: ZeroNet

Post by caryoscelus »

As some of you may already know from my other posts, i'm using ZeroNet (official site wikipedia page) - decentralized (peer to peer) libre software web platform - for my music hosting. That said, i often give links to proxies so that people don't need to download extra software just to listen to my tracks, so i suppose most people are just using those without paying much attention to "broken links". Thus i wanted to start a topic discussing 0net specifically.

In short, ZeroNet is one of the projects of distributed web, where every site is hosted by its users (which both enables cost-free hosting and resistance to certain kind of takedown attacks). There are a lot of technical things i don't like about it, but being able to host any amount of any information, depending only on users being interested in it (and, unlike torrents, without need for still relying on traditional web for listings/comments and such) seems enough compensation; while i haven't tried all of the alternatives, it seems to be one of the best, giving power to create advanced dynamic sites and having some userbase. I'm not sure it can really become the future of internet, but i surely hope so.

Feel free to ask your questions and if you like the idea, try it out for yourself!

Interesting. I'm all for anything privacy related in these odious times of privacy erosion.

I read the FAQ but... do you need a Bitcoin wallet to be able to use it? Also, Tor was mentioned a lot but I presume using a VPN will also give anonymity?

Cheers.

No, but you'll get bitcoin-compatible addresses - they (or rather public/private key pair, i guess) are used as user and site ids. Though i wouldn't recommend using those to store coins - that might be insecure.

I'm not a big VPN specialist, but i would assume it would give about as much anonymity as it gives with regular web, if you make zeronet run through it. And of course, you should always remember that anonymity of your computer is one thing and anonymity of your user identity(ies) is another.
