Linux Mint 18 and MIDI Synth (Roland JD-Xi)

Post by ralphw »

I have Liniux MINT 18, a MIDI-USB adapter, and a MIDI device. (A Roland JD-Xi)

The USB-MIDI provides MIDI in and MIDI-out
[Linux box] --> USB-MIDI adapter -+-- I (MIDI IN cable) ------ JD-XI MIDI OUT port
+---- MIDI OUT (cable) --- JD-XI MIDI IN port
I want to send MIDI commands from the Linux box to the MIDI in port, and hear sounds
%lsusb
Bus 003 Device 006: ID fc08:0101 Conrad Electronic SE MIDI Cable UA0037
I'm running "Linux Mint 18.1
Linux asimov 4.4.0-53-generic #74-Ubuntu SMP Fri Dec 2 15:59:10 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When I followed these directions, I locked up as soon as I tried ruing qjackctl.

Every appplication was hung ad non-responsive, ctrl-alt-DEL didn't work, so I had to do a hard reset of the computer. Not fun.

I'm looking for an updated HOWTO that's written after 2016, that would address the packages that work under Linux MINT 18.1

I'm wary of jack and qjackctl after what happened the last time.
