[ANN] New Wavetable Synth: "Vital"

Post by Audiojunkie »

I didn't see this posted elsewhere, so I thought I'd share:

Matt Tytel (developer of Helm), is coming out with a new wavetable synth called, "Vital". See links below:

(moderation note: removed 'open source', as the source hasn't been opened (yet))

I couldn't find where it's announced that it's Open Source.

From Matt's blog:

New Synth in the Works
I’m working on a new synth! The goal: create the most popular synthesizer in the world.. Not sure if that’s achievable, let alone measureable, but if I hit a million downloads I think I’ll call it a success.

So you want to hear about features. You’ll have to stay tuned for more blog posts then! I can tell you now that there are some analog modelled filters (ZDF, WTF? BBQ), interesting modulation capabilities and a very visual and animated UI (with low CPU usage).

And for those wondering, this new synth will be open-source and pay-what-you-want like just like Helm.

I just emailed Matt to get the word straight from him:

Yep!

Hi Matt,

Will Vital Synth, like Helm, be an open source project that supports Linux? Thank you in advance for your response!

Dang, even more hyped for this now... It's really cruel of them to keep teasing us like this. :P

Matt Tytel deserves a lot of praise.

Not only for releasing high quality libre software, but also for setting the bar higher for everyone else and for selling his stuff, yes - libre software developers too need to feed themselves, and charging money for good products like Helm and Vital without compromising its licensing sends a strong message of self-respect to all libre software developers who don't do it as a hobby.
The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. [Acts 4:32]

Please donate time (even bug reports) or money to libre software 🎁

If this delivers what it promises (and open source) it will be a "game changer", but looking at the business model (free-25$-80$)
I don't think it will be open source .. at least not initially.
Who knows...

I've used the standalone, the LV2, and the win vst3 via wine,
and it's a great instrument, super easy to get under the hood with the
many visuals. A link to intro pricing still available I think in the notes at this youtube page:

All though I'm not following it closely, I expect it to be open source (partly?). Then you pay for the presets and wavetables.

Then it would be a interesting business model. Releasing a open source synth and still be able to buy some bread. :)
