Re: windows95 v1.0
Greetings,
IMO Windows 95 was one of Microsoft's finest achievements. I started using Linux because of it.
Best,

Re: windows95 v1.1: Floppy Disk Support!
Unfortunately, I was unlucky to have never had Windows.
Did I miss anything there?

Re: windows95 v1.1: Floppy Disk Support!
Win95 was awesome back in the day. The first version crashed a lot, but so-called OSR2 fixed that to a pretty good extent. The entire installation was 48 MB. And what could we run on those 48 MB?
Many, many, many concepts and details of the Win95 desktop experience have been borrowed by Linux, especially on KDE — and IceWM, of course.
Their terminal sucked donkey's balls, still does, but then there was Cygwin.
We could do everything.
Those were good times.
- all of MS Office, up to the "2000" version.
- all finance management packages such as Quicken
- professional DTP packages
- CAD
- powerful science software such as Mathematica
- Photoshop
- Sound Forge
- Winamp among many other audio players
- video players
- hundreds or maybe thousands of games
- e-mail and browsers, of course
- instant messaging (UH-OH!)
- IDEs or any other professional programming tool
- databases
- web servers (I used to run Xitami + MySQL + PHP on my desktop)
- a huge number of useful tools and applications (I loved those magazine cover CDs)
- shell/desktop environment aids and reshapers that could radically alter the user's experience

Yes, the windows at that time didn't have an internet connection either, that was great.
The Win95 with floppy drive is also for Linux.
Some old hardware synthesizers (Kawai K5000 for example) can still load sounds with floppy disks and so on.
It might be worth a try for some.

They did. I used to run Zone Alarm (then Kerio later), which allowed me to restrict Internet access to any application of my choice, which... Linux still won't let me do to this day!42low wrote:Firewalls didn't exist yet...

Yeah. Emulators like this are a chance to run otherwise obsolete programs from the past. Many of the synths of that age had Win 95 librarians etc. and these may be revived once again.
Vox, Selmer, Yamaha and Leslie amplifiers. Rickenbacker, Epiphone, Ibanez, Washburn, Segovia, Yamaha and Fender guitars. Hammond, Moog, Roland, Korg, Yamaha, Crumar, Ensoniq and Mellotron keyboards. Xubuntu+KXStudio recording setup.
