Yoshimi went to SynthFest
http://synthfest.co.uk/2017/09/26/synth ... ngs-synth/
to be precise
Now I had intended to go there anyway and drool over all the fantastic kit (like I did last year), but happened to wonder out loud what the punters would think of Yoshimi. I knew that one of the people in the group I was in at the time helped out at the event last year, but didn't realise how far up the ladder he was until I got an invite from the organisers to take Yoshimi along - oh, and a stand would be available free of charge!
So my first reaction was... Panic!
However, one of Yoshimi's little band of helpers put together some flyers, and an A4 display that I printed out myself and took, along with the latest version of Yoshimi (1.5.4) on a reasonably good laptop, a 49 note keyboard and a BCF2000 controller. The venue supplied a pair of very nice speakers.
There was a lot more interest than I expected. Many people were quite stunned by the range and depth of sounds possible.
Solo was liked by a couple of musicians that play live sets.
Our MIDI-learn implementation was much appreciated. The effect of being able to use the BCF buttons to switch engines on and off... also within kits surprised a few
There were several seriously good keyboard players putting Yoshimi through it's paces. One guy *really* got into 'Overdrive' with some great riffs including tasty use of the pitch bend control - would have loved to record it!
One blind guy was being taken round by a friend. He played a few notes then asked whether it could be connected to a screen reader. I was rewarded by a big smile when I said it could
Fewer people than I expected seemed interested in creating their own sounds, but those interested where highly appreciative of the different engines, kits and crossfade - with one 'fuckin hell' when the guy mentally put together all the possibilities!
There were also a couple of 'Wow's when I showed the demo of Yoshimi being set up and run entirely from a MIDI file.
Everyone who started changing instruments/banks seemed to immediately 'get' the structure and the MIDI relationship.
Several people picked up on the idea of running Yoshimi headless as a MIDI controlled synth 'module'.
There were a few calls for an OSX version - strangely none for Windows.
Just one person when told that Yoshimi was Linux only, rather rudely said "Well, it's useless to me." and walked off.
Finally, I had printed 30 flyers - only 6 remained!

Re: Yoshimi went to SynthFest
Very cool. Congratulations on the success!
Ha. I'm sure he'll be asking his buddies about Linux before the week is over.

To be fair, I say the same (hopefully not rudely though!) for anything not available on linux. Often even to things on linux that use the "wrong" license.folderol wrote: Just one person when told that Yoshimi was Linux only, rather rudely said "Well, it's useless to me." and walked off.

Re: Yoshimi went to SynthFest
Thanks for the encouragement people.
I quite often refer to "Yoshimi's little band of helpers". Well, that band has 20 members. Some have contributed a lot, and others maybe just one line, but without them Yoshimi simply would not be where it is now.

'smee again
I've just been sent the link below. It's a lightning tour of what (mostly) the hardware guys are up to.
