[ANN] Vee One Suite 0.8.1 - A Spring'17 release

Post by rncbc »

Great news!

The Vee One Suite of old-school software instruments, respectively synthv1, as a polyphonic subtractive synthesizer, samplv1, a polyphonic sampler synthesizer and drumkv1 as yet another drum-kit sampler, are once again out in the wild!

Still available in dual form:
- a pure stand-alone JACK client with JACK-session, NSM (Non Session management) and both JACK MIDI and ALSA MIDI input support;
- a LV2 instrument plug-in.

The common change-log for this dot release follows:
- Fixed a probable old miss about changing spin-box and drop-down list not reflecting changes immediately into the respective parameter dial knobs.
- Fixed middle-button clicking on the dial-knobs to reset to the current default parameter value.
- Help/Configure.../Options/Use desktop environment native dialogs option is now set initially off by default.
- Added French man page (by Olivier Humbert, thanks).
- Make builds reproducible byte for byte, by getting rid of the configure build date and time stamps.

And here they go again!

Thanks rncbc!
Fun is an understatement with these instruments. SynthV1 has become a go-to favorite for me; it's rock-solid and there's still so much to explore in it. It's got a really rich, powerful sound that most other synths just don't have. And the formant filter is wild!

Grazie, merci, danke, etc..!

Is there a simple way to find out which sound is played at the moment when having the drumkv1 gui open?

That would help adjusting the volume of the samples. Little lights in the list of samples for each sample could be one way to display it.

I have experienced one issue recently with SynthV1. Some of the presets I made previously now sound different. I wonder if it has something to do with the recent update..?
One of these was a preset called "YowEyeYou." The preset in the tarball on my website is not the same as how it sounds in the demo (also on the same webpage.)
There was another (don't remember which at the moment) which caused a horrible loud distortion when I played a note. It wasn't the sound I originally created.

maybe not the last update, probably a few dots earlier than that... i can only refer you to LFO Rate and BPM settings or Delay BPM as well, specially if one were set previously to "Auto" and now they show up as "4.0" which used to be the minimal threshold value long ago.

anyway try to look into these or other parameters that either didn't exist at the time you created the original preset(s) which are probably as old as more than a couple of years perhaps and adjust them to replicate the respective demo sound as much as possible, then save them again with a brand new name or version.

[UPDATE] I see now what's certainly wrong with your "YowEyeYou.synthv1" preset and probably others: you have created them on v0.7.2 and as matter of fact these were bugged with the wrong LFO1 BPM and LFO2 BPM parameter symbolic names--more precisely these were being saved as "LFP1_BPM" and "LFP2_BPM", which of course are not recognized on load in later updated program versions, reverting their respective values to the factory default ("180.0").

The way to fix this is about editing all old .synthv1 files and do replace all "LFP" occurrences for "LFO", literally:

Code: Select all

 cat YowEyeYou.synthv1 | sed 's/LFP/LFO/' > YowEyeYouFixed.synthv1
hth.

Hi rncbc,
I'm updating the presets one-by-one, seems to be going fine so far. Thank you for the help!

However, I have discovered a "bug" (I think). I've attached the preset here for you to test; called "Questionable." Basically what happens: play a chord in the right hand; let the filter envelope decay a bit. Then play a note in the lefthand with the righthand still held down. The filter opens in all the notes, when it should be only in the lefthand note.

Contrarily, if you hold a low note and play a high note, it will reduce the cutoff in the left note.

while trying to play with your Questionable.synthv1 preset I noticed something that might be what you're reporting, but not sure: as if the Bandl.1 and 2 are temporarily switched off on the left-hand notes (or the contrary). Please set both Bandl.1 and 2 to Off on Synth 2 (the only one which is effective, as Synth 1 have OUT Volume set to 0.0) and check if the "bug" is still there.

Exactly right! It behaves right if bandlimit is set to off on synth 2, both waves.
So is it normal for bandlimiting to cause this?

I'm glad to be of help! I also updated my Synthv1 webpage and preset bank. A couple new presets in there, too! :)
Best,
