Native Reaper for Linux?

This is not news at all.
I knew this a long time ago.

the reaper linux port uses its own libswell, a library that implements Windows API as Linux calls.
there's some stuff working, but all the important bits are not done yet.

I may be willing to help them next year, if $$$ is involved

I would be better if it could be open source

My band and I will be using a REAPER based studio during the last 3 days of this year (and I'd suspect a few days in 2013 too) so I've returned to using it only yesterday. As a MIDI editor, its really not that hot and for my purposes both qtractor and MusE are better these days but I'm still going to be doing my MIDI bits under REAPER to avoid any potential import/export headaches.

As a result, I was in the REAPER IRC channel yesterday and brought up the Linux port. One of the more well informed guys in there told me the REAPER devs are just hoping someone (like falktx) will finish porting SWELL (the Simple Windows Emulation Layer) to Linux then the REAPER devs will add JACK support and everything else required to get REAPER running nice and native under Linux.

Bitwig & REAPER running native could go some way to getting many more Linux audio converts I'd imagine. Whereforeart thou Bitwig??

Good question. Near as I can tell, there is no existing Linux version yet. If anyone in the Linux audio community is testing it there's a fair chance I'd know (though of course I could be in the dark as well as anyone else). The company doesn't say squat, so either 1) it's entirely vaporware or 2) they've managed a degree of secrecy even a repressive government would envy.

We are of one mind regarding Reaper's MIDI editing capabilities, though I don't think much of the MIDI editors in MusE and QTractor either.

I wonder if there were any takers for the REAPER (SWELL) GTK/Qt/Linux port bounty? Anyone here read the REAPER forums?

Who knows, maybe native Reaper for Linux could beat Bitwig to getting released? I'd certainly like to see Mixbus and Bitwig get more competition in the commercial Linux DAW dept.

I have posted this on the other thread but for visibility (once I am waiting for either Reaper, a renoise with a piano roll or Bitwig ) and I really think almost none saw it anyway, they should have "advertised" it...

Not supossed to say but here it goes...

Multi midi item visibility/editing along with lanes and item selection, really a big advance for the piano roll IMO.


BTW it looks like tracktion will also have a native Linux version

I'm a registered user of Reaper on Windows and would love to see it ported to Linux.

Once Reaper was on Linux, I'd never have to use Windows again .... (well, except for Melodyne.)

BLARG ARG AIGH!!!! Melodyne is my biggest issue moving to GNU/Linux. There's past reports of it working with WINE, but it never did for me. There's nothing even remotely similar otherwise. And I don't use it for just generic autotuning.

Yeah, I haven't got it working with Wine either and I'm using the bleeding edge version.

I use a lot of hardware synths and though I've successfully got some patch editor librarians working under wine, I haven't gotten others working under wine. So Melodyne and my patch editors/librarians will still need windows. Grumble grumble. Still, it would be great to have reaper on Linux!
