Good linux arpeggiator?

Post by briandc »

Hi everyone,
in the last months, I've explored a LOT of non-native (VST) synths. But now I've returned to native instruments, and staying quite busy with them. I was wondering what you guys use to come up with neat arpeggios? One I can think of is TAL, but I haven't explored the arpeggio-making section yet..

Many VST synths have an arpeggiator area in the GUI, but I haven't seen any in any native synths.. (And what Zynaddsubfx calls arpeggiators, are not arpeggiators, but digital delays..)

Any suggestions welcome!

brian

Wow! Cool! I think it's just what I'm looking for.

... is it already part of the KXStudio package? (I'm not at that PC right now and I don't remember seeing it..)

Thanks! ;)

No, most recent version is not in KXStudio
I'll prepare a source package right away!

Other arpeggiators: More info in Dave Phillips' great Linux Journal articles:

Thanks AutoStatic! :)
Arpage rings a bell, I'll dig into that when I get a chance. Hypercyclic sounds new though.

When you say a "source package," are you saying that it'll be added to the repositories?

Thanks again (and sorry for my ignorance on all this stuff..)

Yes, I'm prepping a source package that I'll upload to the KXStudio-Team main PPA/repository. Basically that's the QmidiArp source tarball with an added 'debian' directory that contains instructions on how to package the QmidiArp application for Debian (well, Ubuntu in this case). If the source package is ready I try to build the package locally first with the pbuilder-dist tool. If that works without errors I upload the source package to the KXStudio-Team PPA and then the servers at Ubuntu spit out packages a little while later that users can download and install.

Man, I just love PPA's.

I put in the command here ^^^, but I got a "can't open /home/brian/qmidiarp....

Was I supposed to add this ppa in another way? Or just apt-get install qmidiarp?

Thanks in advance again,
brian

afaik AutoStatic was just showing how easy is to upload stuff into the PPAs.
The build process and repository setup is automatically handled by the build servers at Launchpad.

qmidiarp is now updated to latest version in KXStudio, thanks to AutoStatic. :D
So, enjoy.
My ignorance is showing again...

Anyway, I did the apt-get install... now I've got it! ;)

Thanks for your patience! :)

Till next time....

Been playing around with qmidiarp and arpage. Both are very nice.

However, I see that when synced to Jack, although it allows me to play in sync with, let's say, Hydrogen, it's quite useless when recording to Audacity, as the only way to get both Hydrogen and the synth+arpeggiator to record, I have to select the PulseAudio Jack SINK, which is quite bad quality..

Anyone have suggestions as to how to record the entire performance in one shot?

Also: can I use these arps without hydrogen?? I'm trying to connect this way: external keyboard > arpage > amsynth (via midi) and amsynth > system (audio)
But I get no arpeggiator action..

falkTX wrote:I know that at least arpage needs jack-transport or it won't "arpeggiate" at all.
So I guess you can start any app that supports transport (Qtractor should be fine), then set the tempo you need and press play.
Thanks FalkTX.. It's all starting to make sense now.. and just why people use Qtractor so much! :D I'll try your suggestion and get more acquainted with it...

Thanks, AutoStatic!

It's an arpeggiator with a strange way of forming arpeggios.. but definitely worth having around. I hope to get better at using it in the coming days/weeks..

Is seq24 included in KXStudio? I'm enjoying this (not very new) video by neuman...

Sure hope so! :D
I think it could do the trick for arpeggiating quite nicely!
