iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
Hi there,
is any of you aware of an online step by step instruction to get an iPod shuffle working under Ubuntu studio?
What I would like to do is drag'n'dropping (mp3)files onto it in some like explorer window and getting them to play if I select play
So far I found this:
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/walter/g ... linux.html
and this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... nux-280679
but to be honest it is a bit of abracadabra to me (and probably outdated?)
Thanks for all help!

Re: iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
Don't panic. You can use rhythmbox, the default music player in ubuntu(studio).

This works for an ipod shuffle too. (For mine at least). If you want it to play the music through jack see http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2507After connecting the iPod, open Rhythmbox and click on your iPod name under Devices on the left panel.
You can play music from the iPod and transfer music to it by drag-and-dropping files from the Library onto the iPod icon. Please note: you might need to restart the Rythmbox for it to recognize the album art on the newly uploaded tracks.
Cheers! Pablo

Re: iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
Hi, thanks for the help!
although there were some complaints about safety issues which I ignored I installed Rythmbox.
The plugin magnatune shop could not be activated.
But I can not see the stuff on it nor can I drop new music on it althoug the mousehand shows a + if I hover over the pod in the left panel...
(I must admit I was always in a fight with itunes too)

Re: iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
This should be very easy.
¿Do you see something like this?
http://imagebin.org/119617
If so, click on the righ arrow. Now you should see something similar to this:
http://imagebin.org/119618
Click on the podcasts folder and you are done.

Re: iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
Thanks Pablo,
where should I see those buttons? In Rythmbox?
My Ipod is listed at the left under Devices.
(I made a screenshot but I do not seem to be allowed to attach it)

Yes, in rhythmbox. Don't you see a little arrow to the right of the GNUPOD, which is the dropdown menu?
You can attach images in imagebin.org for example and the provide the link.
Cheers! Pablo

Re: iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
Hi there; a little update. I can upload picas now...
I got an other ipod for free so I gave the other one to a friend. I got thisone now:
Anyway, if I run rythmbox this is what I see. If I press the "double 8th notes muziek" it shows all(?) the musicfiles in the folder I selected on my pc. I selected all and drag&dropped it onto the ipod icon on the left (highlighted blue)
I removed the device from the pc and connected the headphones. All it says is: "please use itunes to sync music to this ipod"
Thanks for any help! cheers, oNNo

Maybe, you lack some package...
What is the terminal output of
dpkg -l |grep pod
?
Cheers! Pablo

Re: iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
I have installed gtkpod and gtkpod-data in addition to those 2 that you have installed.
Rhytmhbox works here, but maybe, try with gtkpod.
Tip: the multimedia and video board at ubuntuforums.org is a good resource for these kind of issues.

Re: iPod shuffle under Ubuntu studio
Rythmbox asked me today for the 4th time if I want to initialise my ipod. (I already gave it a name 3 times but the model selection is gray)
I do not need podcast, radio or shop. I only want to drag and drop music I have compressed on my computer (from the cd's I have) onto it and play it back on the ipod.
I do not realy need a player with a library...
Could you tip me a different app. or is it my "best bet" anyway?
Why is it impossible to simply make a folder (it is recognized as a usb(?)storage device (locations>computer>ipod)) on it and drag and drop everything in it?
Thanks! oNNo

"Apple closely guards and purposely obscures the workings of iPods even going so far as to alter it from time to time to intentionally make it difficult for non-Apple software and hardware to interoperate with iPods..."Why is it impossible to simply make a folder (it is recognized as a usb(?)storage device (locations>computer>ipod)) on it and drag and drop everything in it?
Read the whole article. It can help you. I can't help you anymore. Mi shuffle works in rhytmhbox and gtkpod and I don't know why yours does not. You will have to do some research. Good luck!
