Help me get that sound

Post by DarkMedina »

I don't know how to explain what I need because I don't know what it is and how to do it.
but I can roughly show

Watch the video I need the sound from the very beginning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-4SLY6yHpo
but my tracks sound like in the middle of this video, When a man explains things in the Ableton. Just like that and sound like straight from the program.

Then. Here is my track. It sounds flat. And right in your face. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUZ_XD-0kIs

That is the normal tracks. They all have some dimension. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDIHCiCNzgw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7Lu9c9LnKQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcI5Q0GnXSA

How to get this space/dimension

that hat needs some delay or reverb on it so that it sounds like its further away. When something is far away you'll hear the "echo" or reverb sooner than something very close and the reverb will be louder relative to the sound than something close. Using level and predelay of reverb/delay can help you move things "forward" or "backward" in the mix.

Give that a whirl and see if you can get your mix more "3D."

If you want the instruments/tracks to blend in, use a reverb bus and rout those instruments to that bus using a aux send
time the reverb to the beat. Good way to check that is to listen to the snare (solo + reverb) and time the reverb so that it dies out at the next snare hit. Usually check the time between beat 2 and 4.

if you want an instrument to stand out more use a reverb/delay (I prefer delay) that is in sync but not to whole beats, or half beats. Dotted 8th notes I like to use for that.

Getting a good stereo width is also important.
Now the classical way of picturing an instrument at a certain spot on the horizon (panorama) so to speak doesn’t always apply to electronic music.
  • Couple of things you can do:
  • Apply a Haas effect. Haas effect is basically delaying one channel of a stereo signal by a few milliseconds, this will create a 'fake' but effective width to a track. Calf has a Haas plugin but I usually use Stereo Balance Control (x42-plugins)
  • Duplicate a track:
hard pan left the original and hard pan right the duplicate.
slightly change some parameters of the tracks from each other. This could be a difference in eq, tuning, some filter parameter, when using a synth ,a synth parameter.
Ideally these should be modulated, randomly over the time of the track, so that the tracks change very slightly in time.
Hope this helps

I don't know what can help
You've listened to this track? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUZ_XD-0kIs
There is already reverb and delay.
But no depth. Just compare the examples that I gave :( Sorry for the stupid questions.

Can the sound card affect the sound? Could it be that I'm using integrated sound card and therefore a flat sound? I have an external sound card but I'm just confused

Not in that way, if it can play the track you want, it should be possible to create it too

You could try Haas effect on a few tracks and more work/processing on the bass and bass drum, I think it could be them that create the feeling you get. Plate reverb on the kick could give it more body and make it wide. You could also try to send the bass to another channel with distortion, eq to attenuate the low-mid range and then a bit of reverb to glue those high stereo frequencies to the original sound.

Anyway, it's a nice track already! :D
