JACKD not starting after new system installation

Post by sadko4u »

Hi, guys!

I've met some problems while running jackd on openSUSE Leap 42.1. Firstly I've build and installed RT kernel. Then I've met that due to some unknown reasons openSUSE provides old FFADO and JACK packages (in older distributions these were newer). So I've uninstalled them and built from scratch JACK and FFADO. When running ffado-mixer on my system, all seems OK: it sees my firewire card configuration. But when starting jack, it declines to use my card. Please help to solve the problem.

Re: JACKD not starting after new system installation

Post by sadko4u »

Finally, I've found the solution:
Kernel 4.2 contains an ALSA kernel driver for audio devices which are
based on the DICE chip -- like the Presonus Firestudio mobile. The kernel
module is called snd-dice. This kernel module and FFADO's jackd backend
cannot be used at the same time.

You have the following alternatives:
- Either use jackd's ALSA backend together with the snd-dice kernel
module (and with ffado-mixer if you need it). This is the way of the
future. :-)
- Or unload snd-dice from the kernel (sudo modprobe -r snd-dice) and use
jackd's FFADO backend (and ffado-mixer) like in the past.
If you really want to, you can configure your system such that
snd-dice is _not_ loaded automatically whenever the Firestudio is
hotplugged. Consult the Debian documentation for how to blacklist
kernel modules. Then you don't need to remember to unload snd-dice
every time before you want to start jackd with FFADO backend.
So after "rmmod snd_dice" the jack started well!

THANK YOU!

This is one of those occasions where I had to create an account just to say thanks. I had ffado/jackd mostly working on 14.04 by using Cadence from the KXStudio repos. But no matter what I tried, I could not get my browser's audio to playback at all (everything else worked flawlessly). I figured since 16.04 was released, I'd go ahead and do a clean upgrade - maybe the issue would sort itself out. Nope! Even worse than before since now jackd wouldn't even start...

So, thanks to Google finding this thread - and to you for writing it, I type one command and everything works again, better than before!

Once again, thank you very much!
