Usage: home studio
Hardware used: Compaq Presario CQ50, Lexicon Alpha, Peavy Predator, 2 SM58s
Software used: Puppy Linux (Pup Studio and TahrPup), Ardour, Audacity, LMMS, Hydrogen,Zynaddsubfx, Rakarrack, Guitarix
Issues with the system (problems, complaints): currently investigating occassional Jack 2 unstability with the Lexicon (sometimes works like a charm, sometimes freezes...).
Overall rating: never used anything other than Linux, and never had to. I love the degree to which you can customize your system to your likes with Linux.

Usage: Home studio

Hardware used:
Asus K55V laptop with Intel Core i7-3610QM 2.30GHz, 8GB of RAM;
Focusrite Scarlett 2i4,
Sire Marcus Miller V7 5 string bass.

Software:
Ubuntu 16.04.1(currently but I like to change it sometimes) with kxstudio repos
Cadence
Catia
Ardour
Drumgizmo
Guitarix
Soundconverter
LV2, LADSPA plugins (such as Calf plugins, eq10q, zam-plugins, etc.)

Issues:
Xruns appears even when buffer size is 256. :/
It never happened when I used LinuxMint17.3 and LinuxMint18 with same setup. Don't know if it is because of DE or newer kernel... Maybe because of insufficient system config (which is fixed now and will test soon).

Overall: hm... All the programs in Unity DE fits in screen perfectly (especially ardour) but responsive time grinds my gears. So this DE gonna be replaced by cinnamon (LM18) or gnome (maybe arch again or ubuntu gnome).

Just starting out, after thrashing around not really knowing what I was doing, I have settled into using;

KXStudio - A/V centred OS
Cadence - Amongst other things JACK management tool
Catia - JACK patchbay
Clauda launcher - LADISH frontend and app launcher
Audacity - for direct audio recording (microphone/guitar)
LMMS - current DAW of choice for sequencing external MIDI devices
QSynth - extra instrument sounds
M-Audio Fast-Track Ultra - phono/MIDI USB interface device
YAMAHA PSS 680 MIDI keyboard/synth - provides it's own voice, rhythm, drum, and synth functions; MIDI IN, OUT and THRU
ALTO LIVE 88 MIDI keyboard controller - weighted full size 88 keys controller only
Ibanez S series electric guitar, Dragon Attack Treble Boost, Marshall Blues Breaker Boost. Line 6 Spider 2 15W modelling amp for the guitar.
Aiwa amp and speakers as a monitor from the laptop/audio interface

That is my current cobbled together 'studio'! I've been playing guitar for about 2 years. But back in the 80s (showing my age *cough*) as a young teen I messed about with a Yamaha PSS 680 and even had it attached by MIDI to an MSX computer at one point... all so long ago!

So I yearn to merge my two 'musical periods' and bring guitar and keyboard/synth, sequencer, live-looping all together in one!

After a bit of a journey I have settled on KXStudio as an OS, and am just starting to put the hardware side together! And starting a steep learning curve of AV linux!

I have two issues in my studio/audio chain/web;
1 - is central hardware. I am thinking about buying a KDE Slimbook to run KXStudio and be my central device for the studio but especially on the road.
2 - is the final output amp. For now I have been using a Line 6 modelling amp - people really hate on them, but for under £100 it gives me a sound I can work with from my Ibanez! However, I'd like to find a permanent solution that can run the guitar and the keyboard? Is there such an amp?

I would also one like some nice monitor speakers or headphones.

I am unsure as to how to finally attach the guitar and the electronica... do I put the guitar through the interface and the DAW? Or do I run the guitar through its own amp, Because I want that really great sound? But then how do i put the guitar into the mix for a loop with the keyboards/synths?

So much learning curve to go!

Usage: narrating howto videos, amateur musician

Hatdware: got a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 (2nd gen) for my birthday this year in February:

Image

together with a Røde NT-1A microphone for voice overs:

Image

Since then, I also bought a nice bass guitar, which is a Fender Squier VM Fretless "P" bass:

Image

(I used to be a musician (bass player) when I was much younger, and got this after a 35-year-or so hiatus)

Software: Debian GNU/Linux (since years my main system at home, on a self-built computer with Intel Core i5 processor)
KXStudio as additional repositories, with all the good stuff that comes with it, like the latest Ardour, the Cadence suite, and so on. Loving it.

At the moment, that bass guitar goes directly into my interface, but I'm considering getting a MarkBass JB Players School combo (with 1x15" speaker) to use both the microphone on its speaker, as also the DI Out (pre fader and tone) to get my pure bass signal into the interface. I can still use gxSVT of the guitarix project if I want to emulate a tube amp and cabinet, which works pretty good (had an original SVT with two "fridges" (8x10" cabs) when I was younger).

Home studio
AMD Phenom II X4 at 3.2 ghz, 8 gig ram, GeForce GTX 750, 1 gig ram, and a keystation mini 32, on openSUSE leap 42.2 (64 bit) using the nvidia drivers.
LMMS, and Audacity

Overall very happy, although it can be a pain to find all the files needed for compiling, because not all distro's use the exact same names, for certain files.

Some vst turn lmms into a crash happy application, but overall lmms is for me very stable.

I love openSUSE, its very user friendly, although for making music, if you don't want to compile programs your self, there might be better distro's.
( kx studio is the one I am thinking about )
LMMS, Ardour, Audacity and Carla are available from the repositories.

There is a problem with lmms, the latest stable release, but that's not an openSUSE problem, all distro's as far as I know have this problem, vestige missing and or not working.
That's why I am using rc 3.
