is it ok to buy a scarlet second gen 2i2 or 2i4?

if yes, do i need to pay extra for 2i4 or would a 2i2 be enough for basic music production?

16 gigs ram

What do you mean? Do they work well in Linux? Then, yes.

It depends on your needs. Do you need to record more than two instruments (or one stereo source) at once? Do you need MIDI? Do you need more than 2 outputs?

That being said, although the 2i2 works well for me, I regret not buying a 6i6 instead (mostly for "future proofing").

I've used both, but ended up upgrading and selling the 2i2 to a friend. They are both great choices for home recording, but get the 2i4 if you plan to record a lot in the future. The direct monitor has a blend knob (super helpful if you encounter latency you need to get around), MIDI in and out (I never use it but it's a feature to be aware of), and more flexibility with the monitoring outputs. Nothing wrong with the 2i2, but for USD25 it's worth saving for the 2i4.
