Are there any MIDI Drum Kits with "real" drum kit layout?

Post by maxxpaul »

Hi there,
As title says ^ - I was wondering does anyone know whether such thing exists?
I mean not a midi-drumpad with a square of ... well... squares you can punch...
But a "real" drum kit with proper bass drum, toms, hi-hat, but just with no sound - but a MIDI out instead.
My kid doesn't want to learn guitar or piano, but he likes drums. He started attending a drums class and I'm thinking instead of e-drums I could buy a midi-controller drum kit if there is such a thing, and plug it to a host.
I could of course buy some real electronic drums like (from a random google search:) this one: Behringer XD8USB 8-piece Electronic Drum Set...
But 300 bucks for a hobby my sun could give up in 2 months seems rarher much for me.
I was hoping a drum set with "no own sound", with no synthesizer in it, should cost less, and allow me to use software synthesis instead.

Thank you.
Paul

You could use Linuxsampler to load the drumkits, or Hydrogen.

There are plenty of choices for acoustic or electronic kits from various sources. Some examples:

For a cheap electronic kit, it may be possible to hack something together from a second hand Guitar Hero or Rockband drumset.

(^^ Ignore the section about the Mac software... look at the URL below for possibilities.)

Thanks for the tips!
I also saw some youtube tutorials about DIY MIDI drum kit but I didn't have the time to watch.
I'll look into it.

I've been maintaining the rbdrum2midi project for a while. You can find a rockband drumkit often at yardsales and second hand shops (mine was given to me). There's no need to modify the controllers, just run our software. The older rockband drum versions that don't have a place to plug in cymbals don't provide any velocity information (so same volume no matter how hard or soft you hit). That makes it not the most musical experience, but its still fun.

What I mean is don't spend too much on a game controller drumkit. IMO that behringer kit you linked is a pretty darn good bang for buck (its been on my wishlist for a while). I wouldn't go too much cheaper or else it can be frustrating to play and he'll be more likely to quit than if the experience is good. So if you find a used rockband kit in the ballpark of $20 I'd nab it, but I wouldn't spring for a new one. If you pay a little more for a nicer kit it would hopefully hold its resale value better than a rockband kit if he does end up dropping it in the end.

Obviously just one man's opinion here, but some things to consider.

Other makers of affordable edrum kits are alesis, pyle and simmons. DDrum has one too. Out of all these I've looked at, the behringer fits my wishlist at the lowest price point. Roland and Yamaha make kits too but they are much nicer and proportionally expensive. Nobody (that I'm aware of) is making a drumkit that ONLY outputs midi. They always have some rudimentary built-in sample player. And frankly its pretty easy once you already have the logic to detect the hits to so it wouldn't save any money not to just include some samples.

I see your point, ssj71. Thanks for all the information, that's a lot for me to analyse especially considering my experience with drums is close to zero.
