I've got everything tested and running: I've used my setup on several gigs and it works like a charm.
Therefore I want to give a short overview of what I have so far.

Hardware:
HP laptop with Intel I5 core
Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL usb soundcard
Boss gt-6 (I'm using this as a midi foot controller, and it's my "worst-case-scenario"-back up, when all systems fail I can connect my guitar with the gt-6)
I'm using a tube poweramp along with one or two loudspeakers to amplify the signal and / or I connect directly with the pa-system using a di-box.

Software:
kxstudio
non-session-manager
I've made a session which contains:
- Several instances of Guitarix using the -n parameter: I've opened an instance for every string + one extra which I only use as a tuner with all the signals connected to it
- Catia: to view all the connections and to alter them if needed
- jackpatch: to save and recall all the connections made

As mentioned above, I'm using my GT-6 as a midicontroller, which works very well.

I've managed to get some good basic presets by altering the standard presets available in Guitarix. In time I like to develop some more guitar-synth-like presets.
I've stopped investing the possibility of converting an audio signal into midi, because I get to much latency.

I like to thank all who helped out with my journey and hope that more people will use open source software for their (live) signal processing. :!: :D

Nice, a screencast of what you do would be great. :D

Guitarix git includes a ring-modulator which will be handy for that.
On the road again.
