+1 that is

Post by tuxbass »

Hello! Finally i found what i was looking for. Really difficult to find all in one info source about linux based audio editing software. For newcomers, that is. Those two wikis in the header above are really priceless :!:

Anyway, about me. I live in Estonia (you probably have never heard of it, so Google it:D), male, 22 years old, studying at the uni. Got really fed up with Windows in the end of last year and decided to upgrade to linux. Have been using Ubuntu and it's variants ever since.

So what's my deal with music? Nope, i'm no artist whatsoever. The fact i'm learning guitar left aside, i wouldn't call myself particularly musical. Tho dnb genre has really had influence on me, and i'd like to peek into the world of its creation :)

Welcome tuxbass (cool name). I've found this a very useful forum, even if it's fairly quiet. I'm still working out how to make music on Linux, but having fun with it.

I'd love to hear more about what gear you have and what you hope to achieve.

I've been adding stuff to the wiki lately. I'm deciding what interface to get, so I'm documenting those I learn about.

Thanks y'all.
steevc, at this moment my lappy is my gear. The learning curve will mosdefly be long, so i believe and hope the virtual keyboard will suffice.
If i advanced that far, i could probably borrow friend's M-Audio Axiom 25 and try that one out. Btw, how's the ubuntu's (or other distros' for that matter) compatibility with midi keyboards?

What i hope to achieve? I'd like to roam freely in audio editing software, comprehend all (well, most) of its capabilities and know how to apply them. If i accidentally happened to create something good for ears, wouldn't hurt either :D

What you mean with the interfaces? Different desktop environments or distros?

Edit: also i'm quite short on time due to studies. Current examinations will be over about the end of the month, tho some school duties expand to summer time too. But hey, i've got all the time in the world:D

My only experience with MIDI is with my old Casio keyboard. A friend gave me his M-Audio Uno USB > MIDI interface and that worked once I installed a driver on (K)Ubuntu. See

The Axiom has a USB interface, but I don't know if that also needs a driver. Something else for the wiki when we find out. I know others around here do more with MIDI and softsynths. I've just used a simple soundfont for some MIDI backing.

Re interfaces, I meant audio interfaces. I mainly work with guitar and vocals, so I need something better than my sound card. Have a Zoom H4 recorder/interface, but that has limitations.

EDIT: Seems the Axiom is plug and play

I guess soundcard is an issue when you're recording artist. Nice to see the Axiom is plug-and-play. Not that i'm complaining, but the main problem with ubuntu is lack of hardware support. Loads of error and trial 'til you get problematic devices working. If ever.
Do you happen to know whether real-time kernel is necessary for newcomer like me (no external instruments whatsoever)? As far as i've understood, i wouldn't need special studio distribution.
