what is a Google Bot exactly?

I'm wondering why those bots are called Google bot or Yahoo bot. Who are they and what has Google to do with it?

google, like most search engines, works (roughly) by building a huge, quickly-searchable database of which words occur often on which pages of the Internet.

'googlebot' is the application Google runs that browses around the 'net and collects this data.
