dmx & linux?

hello,
not sure where i should post this since it's not strictly music-related, but i guess since a lot of you are musicians and djs there must also be some people proficient in organizing events and the technical side of that.
i was thinking of getting a simple dmx dimmer for dimmable lightbulbs and control it via some kind of usb-dmx converter cable and have it react to some kind of beat- or frequency matching with my laptop. anyone knows if there's any trouble with usb2dmx in linux and what kind of software could i use for this?
