Who pays for what ?
Greetings,
Given the massive uproar at KVR over the new Bitwig pricing plan I thought I might run a little informal poll here. It's short and sweet, so here it goes:
Do you financially support Ardour via a monthly payment ?
Do you support any other FLOSS project with regular payments ?
Did you donate money to any open-source developers in 2016 ? If so, how often ?
Did you purchase any commercial music software for Linux in 2016 ?
Details aren't necessary but feel free to add whatever comments you feel are relevant. I'm curious to see where the community stands with regards to funding its own existence.
Best,
dp

No, but I did 'purchase' it for €50 thus having lifetime upgrades and binaries for Windows, if I need that.

No. No. No. No.
I'm not proud of it, but I've always lived on a very tight budget.
Now excuse me, I'm gonna have a peek at all this drama you speak of at KVR...

Re: Who pays for what ?
Also, as a fellow FLOSS developer, I don't ask for donations, and - while I very much appreciate the thought - don't want them.davephillips wrote:

No - don't really use it - except for tests.
However, if I come across issues I report them with as much detail as possible.
Do you support any other FLOSS project with regular payments ?
No - as and when I can afford it.
Again, I post bug reports with as much detail as possible.
Did you donate money to any open-source developers in 2016 ? If so, how often ?
Yes once.
Did you purchase any commercial music software for Linux in 2016 ?
No - never bought any commercial music software at all.

Re: Who pays for what ?
Yes, have done for four years now and before that I'd made a few random donations here and there.davephillips wrote:Do you financially support Ardour via a monthly payment ?
In 2016 I did buy (in a sale) the celeste and glockenspiel add-on for Pianoteq. It's great software and I'm very happy that they support Linux, so I'm happy to support them when there are expansions that I want.davephillips wrote:Did you purchase any commercial music software for Linux in 2016 ?
I bought one other bit of music software last year: the Streetly Tapes Volume 3 expansion for G-Force's M-Tron Pro. Yes, it's closed source and a Windows VST, but there's nothing like it natively.
I've bought linuxDSP plugins in the past, which shows how long it is since I last made a purchase!

Re: Who pays for what ?
Do you financially support Ardour via a monthly payment?
No, I don't use any daw FLOSS or otherwise.
Do you support any other FLOSS project with regular payments?
No, though I regularly donate time and try to fix bugs to the best of my ability when I encounter them.
Did you donate money to any open-source developers in 2016 ? If so, how often ?
Yes, 2-3 times.
Did you purchase any commercial music software for Linux in 2016 ?
No.
I did produce one piece of software for linux which is commercially licensed, the new user interface for ZynAddSubFX named Zyn-Fusion.
It's only temporarily commercially licensed as part of a fundraiser as donations alone couldn't make this software possible.
If anyone is curious about the financial/time side of things for this subproject, I'd be happy to provide details.

Do you financially support Ardour via a monthly payment ?
No. I just made a 50 euro donation one or two years ago. I plan to make another one the day I use it productively (if ever).
Do you support any other FLOSS project with regular payments ?
No. If I did, I think Guitarix would be at the top of the list.
Did you donate money to any open-source developers in 2016 ? If so, how often ?
Not directly. I may have bought one or two Android open source apps though.
Did you purchase any commercial music software for Linux in 2016 ?
No. My last commercial music software purchase was Renoise in...2009, when it was ported to Linux.

yes, 2 or so one-time donations to projects in the year

no, I haven't bought any software for a rather long time
I've tried as some others have to focus more on non-monetary contributions to the community. I also realize that often there are needs for real money to make a project progress. All donations I've given were literally paid forward from donations received for my own projects.
