Spammers working overtime

Post by SR »

It would probably be a good idea to make the site read-only for awhile. It looks like everything by "Malber", "HOTLINE", "topor" and "Drolux" can be deleted. "akm88" looks a little suspicious too.

Moderators, where are you?!?!

Can anything be done about the quantity of spam here? At times it exceeds the number of real posts. I keep flagging them, but I expect Nathan has limited time to get on here and ban them. It gets annoying when I see that there is a new post, but it turns out to be spam.

Do we know if it's humans rather than bots doing the spamming? I just had a look at the register screen and the captcha is fairly hard to read, but I don't know how good the bots are these days. They sometimes seem to paste in vaguely related text that makes me wonder for a moment, but the signature links are generally a give-away. Given this is a fairly low traffic forum they are not reaching many people, but they probably hope that Google will pick up their links.

Possible options, depending on what the board can do:
1. Remove automated registration. Someone would have to manually authorise each new user. How many new legitimate users do we get? I know other sites do this
2. Block signature links. Ideally this should just be for new users
3. Change forum software. This is probably too big a job

I just hate spammers. They spoil the internet for everyone.

I've allready made those and other suggestions. Administration/Mods come to the board once a month.
So, unless somebody will do the work, as a new mod, nothing will change.

It definitely does need an upgrade, no arguments there!

I'd personally like to move away from phpBB since I've not had the best experience administering it, but I'll need to do lots of research.

I'll be the first to admit I rarely log anymore--since starting this site I had a kid and taken on quite a bit more work, and it's hard to find time just to write music, much less really be active in a forum :(

I'm happy to remain "benevolent dictator" and host the site, etc, but I just can't sink hours of time in at this point. That said, I'll look in to a transition or upgrade, possibly for January?

I'd also be glad to look at proposals on how to make this a 100% community maintained and governed site as well, since I just can't really invest the time LM's members really deserve.

Nathan, I think we are all grateful for what you have done here. Managing even a relatively small forum like this takes a lot of time. I don't know what the options are, but I'd like to see a transition to something that allows for better spam prevention and more moderators. This is a great community and I want to see it continue.

Thanks

Thanks for the kind words. I agree regarding a better solution. To all: Why don't we take the discussion to another thread in the Suggestion Box and see what we can come up with?
