Would be nice if we'll protected better against spam. We where in control some time...

Maybe add a forum rule... no digits at the end of your username, or you will get an email and will be removed. All the spammers have it I think...

That means I have to change my name too...

Oh, I don't really know. If you have questions about the sql database and technical type of things I would have to reffer you to Nathan. He's the administrator. I only moderate comments. I don't even have rights to change user names or delete anything other than posts.

@khz I sent a PM, did you get it?

Regarding spam...yes, things did seem pretty good after I installed the new captcha system, but it looks like as we get more hits...we're getting more spam. Pretty normal, I guess. Once we get another moderator it will be better, plus I plan on upgrading us to PHPBB3 in the next few weeks (fingers crossed) and my understanding is that PHPBB3 has better integrated spam control.

Once we have PHPBB3 up and running, we'll see if we need to add in any more drastic measures.

I think the admins should check each day which new members are registered. It's easy to see who is a spammer and it would be nice if those could be removed before they can do any harm...

thanks

Unfortunately Spammers are difficult or impossible to control through completely automatic means. I've been a moderator on other boards and it's really a never-ending job to try and keep up with it. Thanks to Nathan and the other moderators for keeping it as clean as it is.

We are using a captcha system for signups right now that has pretty much eliminated bots. I think all the current spammers are actually "real-live" spammers, so there's not a whole lot we can do about it except our current system of deleting them as soon as we find them. The problem is that although we delete their posts on the forum, it's already too late for the RSS feed.

In my home forum (also phpBB), we have a thread where you must reply with "agree" (the "rules" thread), otherwise you can't post anywhere else.

It's very comfortable, there's no reading cryptic captchas, no hunting down for words, no waiting, just reply like a human.

So far, it has been 100% effective. No spambot has ever gotten past it. We see several spambots register a day, all with 0 posts.

By the way, spambots are now even smarter than some humans. At first the names looked very obvious, but recently, I've been seeing very convincing names, with eye-pleasant capitalization, no numbers to be seen, and very clean and complete profiles.

There are quite a few humans that could learn a thing or two from their naming system  (no offense intended for anyone, if you feel identified, it's just you  )
Expert in non-working solutions.
(Signature shamelessly ripped from someone else, is still the truth)

I think if we see an increase in spam that this may be something to consider. But right now the amount of spam is actually pretty low.
