I think that having an informal competition each month could be fun, and maybe even productive. Competitions seems to be a common thing in creative communities, so I guess it belongs here too. This community is quite small though, so we should make things simple by having no winners or judges. Everyone just submits their take at the competition, and receive feedback from the others.
I have some ideas for competitions here:
Someone submits a recording that others are supposed to mix and master.
Create a synth-preset that sounds very close to a violin, piano, or some other interesting sound/instrument.
Create a hydrogen-drumkit from scratch, either by recording drums, or creating drum-sounds with for example zynaddsubfx.
Of course the competitions should be varied so that no one feels left out. All in all, the only problem I can think of is that uploading could be cumbersome for some.
