Automatic Locking of Threads After A Certain Period of Time

Post by GraysonPeddie »

Is is possible to have threads automatically close during the certain point of time when no one is posting there? Automatic closing of threads after 3 or 6 months is to prevent anyone (even newbies with just no post count at all) from bumping up an old thread such as here: Mid Side Processing in Linux (I already reported the post as off-topic and for bumping up my old thread).

Music Interest: New Age w/ a mix of modern smooth jazz, light techno/trance & downtempo -- something Epcot Future World/Tomorrowland-flavored.

That isn't off-topic nor bumping up a old thread, that, is a bot.
There is a new generation of spam bots on the way, is the same here:
http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php ... 855#p57855

They grab a text from the forum, modify it a bit, if ever, and post it. They have a signature in the post, which, for now isn't a link, but I'm sure that will change soon. I've deleted a lot of them in my forum, I've as well reported them here, just no response from moderation.

What I would say, I see no reason to close old treads therefore, better delete those bots include there posts.
On the road again.

riham (http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic ... 640#p57828)
inram (http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php ... 855#p57855)

Could there be a connection between the two signatures?

well, here is a other one:
zoha ( http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php ... 023#p58023 )

for sure, the text posted is ripped somewhere in the forum.
Even the latest Spam protection from php didn't help against those new bots.

I never liked this idea or people who complain when old threads are bumped.

Why would it make sense to restart a discussion from scratch? Forums document topics. They're like the "Discuss" tab of a wiki page. A topic may evolve and change, especially by the action of new facts and developments, but it's still the same topic, otherwise forbidden from evolving when people are discouraged from building on top of what has been discussed before (which is exactly how free software evolves and improves).

I've seen some pretty ridiculous behavior around this issue. Sometimes someone will revisit an old topic with relevant comments and someone else will chime in just to say "OMG, y r u posting here, this thread is so old, gag me with a spoon!!!1!" rather than contribute something useful.

I agree, it is one of my pet peeves. Information should be organized and categorized. There is no need to make a dozen threads about similar problems and solutions. Fear of thread necromancy is the result of juvenile peer pressure, as is the belief that a user's post count means anything useful.
