I just posted my first external link in the forums and when I clicked on it I was taken straight to the website (so the Linux Musicians website was gone). Which, to me at least, is not good. So my suggestion would be to have the link open in a new window automatically. After all, why would you want to steer people away from the Linux Musicians website? I would have thought that you'd want to have the Linux Musicians website visible (on the taskbar after the focus goes to the external website) and also easily accessible on the user's computer should the user want to return to Linux Musicians.
