questions about looping

Post by mrthraz »

i installed mixxx 1.6.1 on UbuntuSTUDIO Hardy Heron 8.04 with the idea of making a DJ rig on the cheap.

here's my hardware:
HP Pavilion DV9000 17" AMD 64 AthlonX2 with 4 Gigs of ram
Hercules DJ Console (Mac Edition)
MixMan DM2 Digital Music Mixer
Behringer BCF2000 Usb Midi Controller

i found that mixxx has no looping as of yet and had givin' up hope till i saw this

the one function i really want mixxx to do is loop and i thought that the bcf2000 was used with freewheeling i might as well try.

problem is i can't find out how to configure it with fwheelin, there's ton's of info on it but it seems not to work for me.

if someone here knows how to configure fwheelin with the bcf2000 could you please let me know?

Re: questions about looping

or maybe someone thinks there's an app that's better suited to the task like sooperlooper,

my vision was to use the dm2 and the Hercules chained together in jack as one custom controller/interface as described here.

but without looping it was really all for naught IMHO.

oh well, i hope someone sees this and can help me.

yeah it looks like you would have to put the output from mixxx into freewheeling to record the loop, that shouldn't be too hard AFAIK they are both JACK-aware apps.

nice setup BTW ;) i've been looking at the hercules controller too

yes, i realize that. what I'm trying to find out is how one gets a bcf2000 to work with freewheeling. all the modes of the bcf2000 seem to active random functions that are not at all specific, or particularly useful.

thanks :D i traded my bcd2000 for it from a guy on craigslist, the bcd only works on windows (I've forsworn ms) and i only keep my windows partition on my desktop 'cause so much of my old production work is on it.

the herc is cool but it doesn't work in duplex in jack, only input or output (does work in alsa though.) i have mixxx setup to use the dm2 jogwheels to scratch and the herc. jogwheels to jog, together they make a pretty formidable (and cheap) controller.

sounds like driver issues with bcf triggering stuff you don't expect, can't really help with that.

i got similar issues with my tascam, i've got it setup but it has much reduced functionality, although contacted tascam and they might be helping to make that better.

could be worth contacting the manufacturer.

I'm quite sure its not a driver issue.
the bcf2000 works fine in the windows xp and OS X partitions of my desktop.

in fact, it works in the Linux partition as well and works on my ubuntustudio laptop.

i know cause i use it to great effect in ardour gtk2, hydrogen2, rosegarden and lmms.

all these app.s expect the bcf2000 to be in either its native mode (nm), or mackie
emulation (me), or baby hui emulation (hui).

none of these work with freewheeling however nor with the logic pro settings on the bcf2000.
yet this guy is using it with freewheeling.

i suspect there is some type of script like the "controller .xml" files in mixxx must be used, idk, i was hoping someone here did use freewheeling and would know.

you aren't honestly suggesting that i use those translators to try and communicate with someone.

i'd probably insult his mother unintentionally with how well those translators work.

i did hit you up.

i really like "is this england?"

tbh he probably knows enough english to work out what you were saying in an email. the french school system is pretty damn good for that.

glad you like 'is this england' lyrically i think its best thing i done, was written after seeing the film "is this england" taking the shit from that an putting the today spin on it.

recently i been having fun producing, not written lyrics for a bit, i go through phases, this is the beginning really of being able to put all the vocals down over my wierd ass production and i'm doing it all in linux

Mr Thraz & Folks,

I've been remiss about not yet distributing my BCF-2000 setup for Freewheeling. But I'd like to give you guys somewhere to start configuring.

So I've attached my current BCF-2000 preset for Freewheeling. Send it to your BCF-2000 with 'aplaymidi' or similar.

Instructions for Use
:

Top row of 8 buttons: capture/play loops
Bottom row of 8 buttons:
1- Shift (hold)
Hold shift & press top 8 buttons to erase loops
2- Undo (erase last loop)
3- Previous page of 8 loops (or snapshots in snap mode)
4- Next page of 8 loops (or snapshots in snap mode)
5- Deselect all looops
6- Select playing loops
7- Toggle selected loops
8- Create pulse (press this after recording your first loop to lock other loops to it)

Faders:

1-4 are input levels
5 is master input level
6 is master output level
7 is feedback
8 is a quick patch change slider (patches are not actually changed until you press a button- see below)

Group 1 Knobs: Press 1-8 to toggle overdub for loops, Turn 1-8 to adjust loop levels
Group 2 Knobs: Press 1-8 to select loops, Turn to adjust relative level of ALL selected loops
Group 3 Knobs: Turn & Press Knob 8 to browse through and load scenes.
Press Knob 7 to save a scene of all loops.

4 Buttons on bottom right of BCF:

Top Left: Fader mode- switches BCF faders to toggle loop levels
Top Right: Unused
Bottom Left: Patch Change button (activate the MIDI patch you've browsed to).
Bottom Right: Toggle Snap mode
(In snap mode: Shows snapshots.
Select snapshots with loop buttons 1-8 (top row of 8 buttons).
Page through snapshots with buttons 3 and 4 on the bottom row of 8 buttons.)

That's all for now. I hope this helps.
