I'd like to have virtual midi keyboard on my laptop, but unfortunately I can't get them working.

Tried this far:

- jack midi mode is seq
- started mixbus
- Launched jack-keyboard to mixbus track, pressing keys doe not show any midi event on mixbus

Tried also vmpk, and launched also a2jmidid, and made connections, but no any midi events from there any better.

Ideas?

Here's how I do it, example for Carla-Rack (I don't use Mixbus as a DAW):
  1. Start Jack (i.e. jackd -d alsa --device hw:1 &, I hate launching Jack via Qjackctl).
  2. Start Carla-rack.
  3. Start VMPK (= virtual midi piano keyboard).
  4. Open a virtual synthesizer in Carla-rack (e.g. a VST of the almighty Minimoog)
  5. Go to the "Patchbay" tab in Carla.
  6. Connect VMPK output to Carla Midi input (red in Carla = midi; blue = audio).
  7. Connect Carla's audio output to your systems playback input.
See picture below:

Example for Qtractor:

If you open a virtual synthsizer VST in (any?) DAW Qjackctl probably look like this:

Good luck in Mixbus! :)

Could you post a screenshot of Qjackctl?

How are you checking for MIDI events in Mixbus?

Perhaps try to connect two instances of jack-keyboard together. When you press a note on one of them, you'll see the corresponding note pressed on the other.
If this does not work, something strange is up. Maybe restart the Jack server?

If this works, try with Ardour. If that works, try to find how you did it differently in Mixbus.

Stupid user error: in Ardour / Mixbus, to react on midi input, track has to be set recording.
