I think there is nothing radical happening in that release (running self built version of it already). Haven't seen FL studio, so I can't imagine what would that magical something be, but sure, there is things that are done better in commercial apps.

Is FLStudio the perfect thing (except for license)? Or are there some other proprietary solutions that you are looking for an open-source equivalent? I'm still trying to grasp exactly what kind of workflow you are looking for.

Don't count on much from Ardour 6. From what I understand it is entirely a major overhaul of the way that Ardour manages time. Ardour 5 has subtle timing bugs, including race conditions that can result in midi notes getting stuck, among other things. Ardour 6 likely won't have any new features, and has no projected deadline, but will hopefully make things much more stable and facilitate new feature development for 7.

The beat and the rhythm section is the weakest part of my professional audio operating system. Everything else from guitar to synth from midi to live sessions is well covered and i have absolutely no issues whatsoever. And yes besides FLStudio i was relying on Propellerhead' ReBirth or its linux alternative ReBorn (not supported for years and it uses OSS for managing the sound). ReBirth is basically T808/T909 emulator, that allows switching between 16 (2x8) pre-programed beat patterns and could be very useful in Live sessions or Improvisations. Imagine a combination between seq24 and Hydrogen. Another useful detail is that both ReBirth and FLStudio allows to be controlled with MIDI device (in my case Evolution MK449-C).
So in two words i want to control the beats with a MIDI keyboard/device and i want to be able to have beats arranged in such a way that i can improvise at the moment. I want flexibility, choice and control.

Have you checked non-sequencer? With it you can create patterns, from which you can create phrases, and from phrases you can create sequences.

And you can use it also as live-instrument, controlling playing patterns with midi events. Manual may not be complete, but author actively answers questions in mailing list. http://non.tuxfamily.org/wiki/Documentation

You may want to check out my "BackupBand" linux app. It's an auto-arranger app that implements a guitarist, bassist, and drummer that follow your chord changes to play along with you. It's designed specifically for live performance. You can turn off the guitarist and bassist if you need only the drummer.

1.0 is not yet released. But please give it a try. The documentation tells you how to install and run it.

Hello fellows,
Allow me to give you and example of what i am trying to achieve.
Both of the tracks are live improvisations produced under Linux operating system and manipulated with Evolution MK449 MIDI Keyboard.

https://soundcloud.com/totalchaos-1/improvisation
https://soundcloud.com/biser-angelov/neutron

I want to achieve this with free and open source application(s).
And I will experiment with the suggestions that you are posting here. They will be appreciated appropriately.

Best regards,
Totalchaos

Are your all loops pre-programmed, or do you also create new loops on the fly?

I think your quest will be more in finding the right samples then finding the right software.

With the (highly common) software i have (ardour, hydrogen, lmms) i can make this too. Only need to find some good samples (for those the synths can't create, but a lot they will cover) and learn how to "twist and bend" those samples and sounds.
I think you missed thing 'live'. Or at least I understood that point was finding software which suits to live performance, launching loops with external midi controller.

If use would be samples and audio loops, then sooperlooper is also worth checking.

What about http://openavproductions.com/luppp/ ?

Luppp is a music creation tool, intended for live use. The focus is on real time processing and a fast and intuitive workflow. With extensive MIDI mapping support, you can get looping just how you like!

Everything is produced and manipulated in real time. And in this particular examples, there are no samples in the rhythm and the base line. Its all improvised and controlled with the keys and knobs on my midi keyboard. The keyboard from my profile picture.

Actually there are no samples in those songs. And that is the point. Its not about the sound of Roland TR 808 and TR909. Its about the ability to make my music and my beat/baseline in this particular way.
42low wrote: Learn. Search. Experiment. Try. Understand the deeper process behind it and the possibilities.
It's not "some software pushing the knob and all comes out by itselve". Even if it would be it would not be good as everyone could.
It's a learning curve. Start with it, now, not tomorrow. In about a year you "can do anything with it", but even then it won't be everything as you keep discovering possibilities and fun tricks.
Here i agree 100%
And that was the purpose of this post in a first place. To discover a new ways to make my music and my rhythm/baseline in particular. The two songs i shared above are examples of what i do on Linux with the right (proprietary) software. So i am searching for a free and open source application that can be a worthy match.

Meanwhile here is a more recent live improvisation that i made a few weeks ago, with a new approach and without the proprietary beat/base makers i used to play in my improvisation sessions. A first step in a new path, although i am not still not satisfied with the rhythm part. Although imho the song is quite catchy, i still feel it as a step back regarding software capabilities.
