Drum module

Post by kyokurider »

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place but...; i have seen a product released by Yamaha, EAD10 drum module. Basically it looks like a drum module and a receptor with 2 mics in stereo ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ud6iDLbjyA)
I have no idea how it works, but it seems that the 2 mics will pick up the instrument sound when played and i guess based on the frequency of the instruments recorded will assign a sound from the drum module to each, in a fashion so that when you play the snare you will trigger the snare sound you have configured in the drum module, and when you hit a cymbal ... and so on.
I wonder if there is a way to achieve this with Linux and sw, so that i set up a mic that will record and send the audio to the computer who will do its part in real time, much in the way this module does. Maybe a sw first will analyze the frequency and then send each output separately to the sequencer where you have the sounds configured...

I hope i make the point across, sorry if i did not explain myself better. Maybe someone with experience in the field can assess the viability and if this is an option so i could explore and invest sometime trying to configure a similar thing, thanks in advance.

Thank you for sharing that video! I've never worked with the EAD10 before, but I'm in awe of what it can do. I still can't believe there are no triggers on the cymbals. Incredible.

I'm not aware of any easy way to do this with existing Linux software (or any other OS for that matter.) In fact, I'd be tempted to leave that stuff to the module, and have Linux handle the recording and sample playback.

A while ago, I explored the possibility of capturing drum notes in Linux without a module. I thought it would be as easy as "plug drum pads into audio interface and run software." But I wasn't able to find an easy way to do that. The closest thing I could find was people building their own drum modules and running custom software.

I'm not sure why nobody has tried to emulate a drum module in software. If I'm wrong, and someone knows how to do this, please post links!

That said, if you already have an EAD10, and it's able to distinguish between different instruments by their frequency, it would be able to send midi info, and you could have that trigger drum sounds in Hydrogen or LinuxSampler.
