Radium ?

Post by jonetsu »

Anyone using this ?

http://users.notam02.no/~kjetism/radium/

Demo, symphonic 'disco'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGtlJKmGLNY

Demo, free jazz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPCot-J28Uw

Source is on github. They asked for the compiled version a little money, not much.

Cheers.

I like the concept, but the installation process did mess up my system, and I remember having some unkind words with the dev. He seems a gifted guy, but I really don't like his business model either. I'd like to try again Radium, if there is a "trial" version, or if it goes GPL and is well packaged.

Nice technology (pure data is indeed in great need of a user friendly front end), but Radium takes that verticality concept too far to my taste.
Seriously: just open one of the youtube demos, rotate your screen 90 degrees and you have a normal DAW...
(& I'm saying this as a Renoise user :D).

Otherwise, as stanlea said: the business model doesn't make any sense. Publishing sources and then crippling packaging is not gonna win much customers (free or paying) - especially in such a niche market.
I get that monetization is not necessarily something easy to sort out for an open source developer, but in it's current state, I bet Radium would be generating more income with just a donation button and/or a nag screen.
This approach could be explained, maybe if the developer is doing it mainly for himself and doesn't really care about building any kind of user base.
But then, why would you want to spent time on it as a user...

On the plus side: I like the release early / release often model with a clear changelog. +5 for that.

As far as open source modular trackers go, you could also have a look at http://buzztrax.org/, even if development is slower paced.

Actually, after looking again at the git repo I take it back regarding the business model: there seems to be a small community of active users, there's a donation button, and prioritization is done according to bounties. I don't know how well that works in practise, but fair enough...
So it's mostly about the packaging being a royal pain due to the number of dependencies, and the binaries being only demos - nothing really dramatic if you compare, let's say to Ardour ;-)
