impro-visor: how to get MIDI output
I can't seem to get impro-visor to have MIDI output show up or connect or anything to actually work. I'm using KXStudio… help?
Re: impro-visor: how to get MIDI output
I believe you need to use virmidi, i.e. do "sudo modprobe snd-virmidi" to create "virtual midi ports" for Improvisor which will be visible to Jack (not that I really understand what a "virtual midi port" is.
I tried to install the latest Improvisor, 8.11 on kxstudio 14.04 but cannot get it to run. First the zip file does not contain the installation shell script (Impro-Visor_unix_8_11.sh) which, however, I was able to find by searching the Improvisor Yahoo support forum. I don't know what you're supposed to do with the code in the zip file, there seem to be no instructions included. So I ran the installation script, but then found that Java 1.8 is needed, and I only got 1.7 (OpenJDK version). I downloaded the Oracle jre1.8.0_111 tar file but don't know how to install that (only RPM available no deb). Then I found I had an old Impro-Visor_unix_7_0.sh script which I was able to run and install Improvisor 7.0. Unfortunately, that does not run due to a java error, so make OpenJDK java does not work with Improvisor(?)
Anyway, how did you get Improvisor to run?

Re: impro-visor: how to get MIDI output
I just installed impro-visor from the KXStudio repos, and ran it. No issues. I'm actually on KDE Neon, based on 16.04. The install included some Java dependencies.
That snd-virmidi thing worked! what is that? Why can't it just use ALSA MIDI?
Would the best easy way to work in the future be to create a bash alias for improvisor that is something like `sudo modprobe snd-virmidi && impro-visor`?

For a program with some similiar functionality, you may want to try my BackupBand software.
