I'd say the sound card is the most important part, but that's me being a sound engineer. Get an RME if you can, have had the least hassle with them.
Lots of RAM is also good to have, at least 4GB.

Re: What is a good cheap new netbook to get?
If the HP works well otherwise, wouldn't it make more sense to get an external audio interface instead of a netbook? I have an acer aspire one 150, but it doesn't work too well for audio. The internal sound cards of these things suck anyway.

Have you considered simply using a wireless computer keyboard?

Re: Killswitch effect
With a noise gate? Feed a periodic signal into the sidechain (if you find a gate with a sidechain input, that is)
Or a simple logic gate or a vca going between 0 and 100% in a modular synth.
EDIT: You only need to modulate the volume with a square wave.

Re: Fan control (software)
My netbooks fan is controlled by a kernel module. All modern fans are controlled by the bios anyway. Actually, somewhere in /proc/acpi you can see the status of most fans, and perhaps you can even control them that way.

Re: Will this midi-keyboard work in 10.04
It's a midi input device, so why should it show up as a sound card? Does it show up on the alsa midi pane in qjackctl?

Looks pretty good.
Can you make a comparison measurement, with DRC on, with the mic in two different positions, say 0,5 to 1m further back?

Lash, Ladish and now jack_session. Looks like a battle of the session managers is about to happen.

Re: Creating a Music video
@Dave, your review makes it look like Lives is actually usable for video editing. I'm looking for something useable on my Arch setup, and I won't install hundreds of KDE libs to watch Kdenlive crash. And jack transport integration is more than a bonus to me. I haven't really tested the latest Lives ...

what exectly do mean by "fluffy stuff"? anything like mineral wool? what is the german word? Yes, mineral wool or glass wool. I like the cheap yellow glass wool. You could simply buy a few packs and pile them in the corners, you can even leave them in the plastic wrapping. I will search a...

Looks like your monitors were sitting right in the 41/42Hz dip. Now they're in the 200Hz dip. Or your microphone is. Or both. You can experiment with positioning as much as you like. In an untreated room, is can only get less terrible, never acceptable or even good. And your room dimensions really s...

btw. what is best value for the octave-smoothing for the graphs? the MXL graph looks like 1/1 smoothing so I smoothed 1/1 too in above post......others are 1/5 Well, if you want to sell the room, use octave smoothing. Otherwise, it really depends what you want to analyse. For bass response, as litt...
